[CNN. 6.27.03] BRISBANE, Australia -- Imagine a gun that fires a million rounds a minute -- enough to shred a target in a blink of an eye, or throw up a defensive wall against an incoming missile.

This is Metal Storm, a weapons system that forsakes old-style mechanics for the speed of electronics.

Its inventor is Mike O'Dwyer, a one-time grocer in the Australian city of Brisbane. He's spent 30 years and much of his own money to develop the technology.

Now, finally, the doors are opening for him at the Pentagon, the U.S. Defense Department's headquarters.

Ouch. Anyone heard of MechWarrior? This is getting close.

Check this out:
"Where network-centric warfare is going is moving the principal systems of weapons from the big, heavy, slow stuff to the small, light, fast, inexpensive (weapons), many of (which) -- and here's the important part -- is very smart."

I think the key phrase is: "network-centric warfare "

It's interesting how different paradigms infect the thinking of so many different disciplines. We're seeing networks everywhere. Now we're seeing the linked battlefield. A move towards faster smaller units working as one. We saw quite a bit of that in the Iraq conflict with the increased coordination of mech, infantry, and air. One particular example was the ground forces having screenshots of where enemy targets were in real-time as spotted by helicopters and planes.

Of course, networks are everywhere else too. They are appearing in the white papers of many somewhat unrelated scientific disciplines.

its interesting that guys are so focused on blowing shit up all the time.
:(

sometimes i wish women were the dominant ones. we would all be intensely focused on which shoes matches our ear rings instead of developing longer range missiles and over throwing governments... and the world would be a quieter place.

Men are simple creatures... if they can't fuck it, kill it or eat it, they're usually not interested.

That's not necessarily a bad thing, since it makes 'em pretty easy to please. :rokk:

Could keep one of these babies in the backyard and no one would be the wiser. Can get rid of those pesky cattle once and for all.

I can see this being an invaluable household tool for stopping door-to-door salesmen :-)

Metal Storm 40mm pod and flashbangs

At least this guy's got it right - not just inventing weapons out of interest of destryoing shit, but also to make tons of money ;)
