I went yesterday.

Remove the very cool effects (most of which were simply taken from the first) and this movie blows monkey chunks. :barfon:

The entire time spent in Zion was terrible, the rave had absolutely no use except to give the puberty crowd something to spark an over active sex drive. :redance: :cdance:

The love scene with Neo and Trinity had no bearing on the story, and they seem to have forgotten that they removed the electrodes from Neo's back in the first movie. (Besides which, I don't think anyone over there gets the fact that without the leather suit and cool moves there is nothing sexy about Trinity)

The Oracle lent nothing to the story, as did the totaly gratuitous orgasm cake. The guys girlfriend wanting a kiss from Neo could only have been to fulfill a contract demand by Reeves that he gets to kiss a hot chick in this movie (again no point at all)

The fight scenes were good, except for every time Neo strikes a "Bill and Ted" Wild Stallions pose. (Bill and Ted actually had a better storyline)

They left out option 3 in Neo's meeting with the architect - tear his head off so there is no one to rebuild the Matrix for a sixth time. (That would have been my choice)

Oh yea, for anyone that didn't see it - Agent Smith is a self replicating virus - and the space on Earth outside the matrix (Zion) is all part of an even larger Matrix so that even those that are Free are not really.

Can anyone tell me who it was that survived the destruction of Zion ? I saw the dude on the table at the end, but had absolutely no recolection of who it was.

I saw an article that Albino's were pissed about the movie - I don't know why - the Albino Twins were one of the only cool things happening.

I would give Reloaded an OK on the entertainment scale, but it falls way short of what could be done with the concept on an intelectual scale.

To me, not really worth the 30 dollars between 2 tickets, a bag of popcorn, and 2 drinks. Let alone the 21 1/2 minutes of advertisements and previews and the sore ass from an uncorfortable seat. It might also taint my judgement that I have a better sound system at home them they do.

I have to agree with you there, but i'm not writing it off until i've seen it a few more times. i have a feeling there's a lot more to the story than what can be picked up on first viewing

bring on the dvd!

We have been speculating the relevance of the love scene as we thought the same thing, it just came out of nowhere ...

in the next matrix, we think that trinity is pregnant, and that they actually find out that their baby is 'the one', not neo ... hence throwing in a random fuck scene just to make sure we know that they fucked at least once

I think the oracle's story was told to explain the concept of programs running within programs ... she confessed she was probably just a program, and therefore couldn't be trusted any more than the other programs ... at the end they say 'the prophecy was false' but i am not sure if that means that everything the oracle said was false ...

the kiss was to illustrate the emotional connection between neo and trinity, because later the dude at the end explains that the reason they keep failing is that neo choses his emotional connection to trinity over opening the door to the source

:biglaugh: Totally dude!!
I crack up in the first one when he says 'i know kung fu' and 'woah'

Was this guy supposed to be colonel sanders?!!? I don't really understand all of what he said at the end, but if i got what he was saying right, neo should have gone through the other door to the source and it would have all been ok? If he didn't choose love would he have saved the world!?

Earlier in the movie, an agent killed one of the zion folks while he was in the matrix and used the 'phonecall' to get into zion pretending to be the guy he killed ... i *think* this is the same guy ... the guy who was dead on the table at the end of the movie had, earlier in the movie, followed behind neo & trinity with a knife, trying to kill him ... so i think that was the same person but it was really hard to follow

cj 05-18-2003 08:48 AM

i meant the guy that was NOT dead on the table at the end

Almighty Colin 05-18-2003 08:58 PM

People dance. People love. Computers don't.

I thought the Oracle was a really cool part of the story. In fact I thought she was central to the story. She (it/the program) was the one that proposed the "give them a choice" solution to making the Matrix more believable.

RawAlex 05-18-2003 11:30 PM

Sadly, I saw half of Matrix 2, because the other half won't be out for anotehr 6 months. Sucks when you can see people trying to suck money out of your pocket so blatantly. There was ALOT of pissed off people in the theater I was in, including people tossing stuff at the screen at the end.

I suspect they had enough ideas and story for about 160 minutes or so... and that would be too long for a single movie. So they added a bunch of filler, puffed it up, etc... so they can have the 220 minutes they needed to make TWO movies... make twice the money... they shot them all at the same time.

I suspect that most of the fluff ended up in this one - I don't intend to find out though, I will enjoy the next one when it mysteriously appears in Divx format.

Alex - I'm shocked, he he he :D

cj 05-19-2003 02:08 AM

alex, i very much felt that way when it was over ...

its like they spent the whole movie setting up for the next movie ...

i guess its the same way that surfers hate us when they sign up to a paysite only to get bombarded with upsells ;-)

smart marketing on their part & I doubt they'll miss your attendance at number 3 alex ;-)

RawAlex 05-19-2003 03:55 AM

Vick, I already paid to see the movie, they only delilvered half of it, so I will watch the other half the best way I know how.

cj: I don't mind the upsell, but judging by the reaction at the screening I was at, there are going to be alot of people out there more pissed off at the "upsell" than is normal. Sort of like what happened to the star wars movies, we all know there is going to be "#3", so #2 didn't have to be that good... it was just filling in the space between 1 and 3, which is just backfilling in for 4-6, in the end.

Not that they don't make money, but I think the public is going to get very tired of "good movie from last year 2"... this summer is mostly sequels... makes me wonder.

I didn't feel the same way as most seem to feel. Matrix is a sci-fli/"martial arts" flick and I think it is what it could be expected to be. Matrix Reloaded is a combination of campy sci fi films and old school karate flicks where the fights seem to come out of nowhere and are more art that real.

I just went to be entertained and I was. Unquestionably, I got at least $7 in entertainment.

The sophomore jinx sequel phenomena is an ages old one. Following up what is considered already to be cult-classicish appeal with a movie as good is very improbable. Regression towards the mean. The SI jinx. The sophomore jinx in sports. Though I thought "Empire Strikes Back" was by far the best of the original Star Wars trilogy and it was number two it did have that cliff-hanger ending and it's never taken away from the series to me - only added to it.

Planet of the Apes was like that. How do you follow up on the original Planet of the Apes? You don't. You just present more movies that add to the story and entertain people that are into it.

Maybe it's about expectations. I went to see a sci-fi flick that had already presented the basic plotline. I knew the dialogue would consist of more philosophical musings on the nature of reality and largely be a rehash of some of the same conversations we have at Oprano. The plotline moved forward, there were some kick ass fights, there was art, and Keanu Reaves makes a cooler Superman than Christopher Reaves.

Okay...I finally saw it last night.

I'm almost positive the guy on the table at the end was "Cypher" from the first movie.

I think there were a ton of Jesus references in this one that point to Trinity and Neo having a child who actually is "the One."

Neo's real first name (I'm pretty sure) is Joseph. Joseph is the father of Jesus.

"Trinity" is self explanitory.

The "Father of the Matrix" guy told Neo that there would be 13 people left after Zion was destroyed. There were 13 people at the Last Supper including......

Cypher in the role of Judas.

Maybe I'm reaching....but my prediction is that in the 3rd. movie (or should I say the second half of this movie) that Neo and Trinity's offspring saves the human race.

I also saw the trailer for Terminator 3 which is a movie I've been waiting 10 years to see....and it left me pretty flat. :/

Where'd that come from? Somewhere in the movie and I missed it?

Mojo 05-19-2003 11:28 AM

I could be mistaken. I thought it was said in the first movie.

I'm definitely mistaken about the "13" reference...he actually calls for 23 people.

Mojo 05-19-2003 11:30 AM

Shit. Wrong again. Thomas anderson. I'm a moron.

The mark of good sci fi. People discussing what is actually going on, what has happened, and what is going to happen.

T-Rav 05-19-2003 02:49 PM

I agree with Colin almost word for word.

I was very entertained. The fight scenes were cool, at times they got a little exhaustive. One of my favorites was the highway scene. That was good shit, had me on the edge of my seat and bobbing my head up and down dodging stuff.

I am a little unclear as to exactly what the architect was saying and felt like I needed a couple hits of acid to follow it. I'd like to watch it again...soon.

I'm pretty sure the guy on the table was the guy with the knife, and the guy that Mr. Smith turned himself into before being sent back to Zion.

Now, I think that they are still in the Matrix...even the people that think they are free. Is that what you all got out of it?

I will admit the end was a little abrubt for me. I don't mind a cliff hanger, but that cut off real quick.

KC 05-20-2003 02:27 AM

The fight scenes were by far too long.. I studied Tae Kwon Do for 10 years and EVEN I thought they were overkill! If Neo was really such a badass, why did each fight take so long????

I agree that I got my $7 out of the movie.. I've certainly spent more for less value in the past!! The movie was so overhyped, it would be hard to live up to expectations. I give it a 7 out of 10.

And that right there is why the movie was a success ... we have been having discussions all week here in the office and have some crazy theories based on miniscule details ... we're off to see it again this weekend ;-)

This site had me reading for a while ...
Matrix Fans

While I was in the movie, i tried to get some shots with my camera but i was so paranoid of being arrested for trying to pirate the movie that I mostly just got pics of 2 seats and the backs of people's heads ... :biglaugh:

but if you really want to see the ending again, the final 1 minute of the movie is at the very bottom of the page, viewed between 2 silhouettes & with shocking audio quality ... ;-)

fuckin A! that highway scene was definately the best in the movie ... for so many reasons ... the highlight for me was trinity weaving through the oncoming traffic on the bike

Me too ... that's why i'm seeing it again, that part needs to be watched 10 times to get everything from it we are supposed to get ...

He was saying more of what the oracle said, about the matrix being more believable if you give the humans the idea that they have a choice, even though the matrix makes the choice for them ... and he rambled on for ages about the flaws in human beings, and that a human would always be ruled by emotions & that neo's choice would always be love. he also babbled about the city of zion not really being outside the matrix, that its just part of a bigger matrix, and that's how the sentinels knew how to get to zion and destroy it so quickly ...

Quote:

I'm pretty sure the guy on the table was the guy with the knife, and the guy that Mr. Smith turned himself into before being sent back to Zion.
It was definately the guy with the knife, and I *think* its the same guy mr smith possessed ... but i don't remember seeing him for long enough before he was possessed ... if its a key part of the movie, they did a bad job of sharing the clue with us ... and remember how agent smith has his own agenda to get out of the matrix as he's sick of his job of guarding it? i want to know how that fits into him breaking into zion ...

Quote:

Now, I think that they are still in the Matrix...even the people that think they are free. Is that what you all got out of it?
yes, the matrix controls zion, the oracle, and all of the things the humans believed were external to the matrix ... this movie was the story of the 6th time that zion had rebuilt itself, but each time the matrix made the 'free' humans believe it was the first time. neo had been in the same position 6 times and the ending had been the same each time because neo always chooses the love door over opening the door to the source ...

Almighty Colin 05-20-2003 05:59 AM

The highway scene was definitely badass.

My favorite scenes in order were:

1. The fight scene vs. the multi-Smiths :okthumb:
2. The dance/club scene [Come on, now. It was cool as shit. Beautiful.]
3. The highway scene. Yeah, wow. The fight on top of the truck was nice. Blurrr.
4. The architect's speech in the TV room. Def.
5. Neo speaking to his followers [the Gandhi scene] ;-)
