Silver Oak and Duckhorn! I don't like Opus wine but the building is really cool. I've heard that the tasting class at Joseph Phelps is the best. St. Supery has a cool self guided tour that has stations where you can stick your nose in a tube and smell all of the different things they use to describe wines like grass, blackberry, oak etc.

Clos Pegase has amazing art.

I also keep reading about a Sake "winery", obviously it has nothing to do with Napa and grapes but it seems like a cool place to do sake tastings.

Domaine Chandon DOES have awesome food, especially for lunch on the terrace! Tra Vigner is another favorite for dinner. Have fun! :)

*taking notes*

i have had plans to drive through north cali many times but something always comes up to keep me away.

I will definately do a napa trip one of these days, and i'll pack an extra suitcase (or 2) for take away's ;-)

I've figured out I can fit an entire carton if I wrap the bottles in my clothes

Be careful using refrigerators that were not designed for wine to keep your wine cool. Most non-wine refrigerators allow for a greater difference in temperature before turning on, and thus there is a greater temperature variation throughout the cycle. Wine specific refrigerators cycle on and off more frequently, thus keeping a more constant temperature. Also, since refrigeration drys air, most wine specific refrigerators add some moisture back to the cooled air.

On another note:

Napa, where is that? Is that the valley over the hills that gets nice and hot? Good for Cab and Merlot, but for your Chards and Pinots stick to Sonoma :)

If you are in the neighborhood LMK, I'd love to 'go tasting' :rokk:

Bahhhh

Ive used this product and it ROCKS!!!

the temp of the fridge is controled by the unit the fridge is pluged into

as for humidity yes that is an issue of sorts. I just kept a bowl of water in the fridge work to keep a 58f and about 50% humidy.
Not a perfect cellar but for 150 bucks for your day to day and some decent wine its perfect.

where in sonoma are you?

i used to live on Bennett valley rd just down from Matanzas creek winery The creek bearing the same name ran thru my backyard

ahhh I miss the hills

Plugger 04-26-2003 10:49 PM

I am in Healdsburg, a bit more north :)

You are right for "your day to day and some decent wine its perfect" is probably correct.

I am not a big advocate of spending huge amounts of money on wine (I think you can get great wine for low cost if you search around). If you are, however, going to spend $1800/case on some wine, it seems as if you should be willing to spend at least the same amount for a proper place to store it?

Personally, I have been sticking with the imports, esp. those from North Berkley and Eric Solomon. The CA guys are just charging too much for their juice.

For CA, I like:

Walter Hansel
Limerick Lane
Roshambo
Mason
Lazy Creek
Dehlinger
