"France has neither winter nor summer nor morals. Apart from these drawbacks
it is a fine country. France has usually been governed by prostitutes." ---Mark Twain "I would rather have a German division in front of me than a French one behind me." --- General George S. Patton "Going to war without France is like going deer hunting without your accordion." --Norman Schwartzkopf "We can stand here like the French, or we can do something about it." ---- Marge Simpson "As far as I'm concerned, war always means failure" ---Jacques Chirac, President of France "As far as France is concerned, you're right." ---Rush Limbaugh, "The only time France wants us to go to war is when the German Army is sitting in Paris sipping coffee." --- Regis Philbin "The French are a smallish, monkey-looking bunch and not dressed any better, on average, than the citizens of Baltimore. True, you can sit outside in Paris and drink little cups of coffee, but why this is more stylish than sitting inside and drinking large glasses of whiskey I don't know." --- P.J O'Rourke (1989) "You know, the French remind me a little bit of an aging actress of the 1940s who was still trying to dine out on her looks but doesn't have the face for it." ---John McCain, U.S. Senator from Arizona "You know why the French don't want to bomb Saddam Hussein? Because he hates America, he loves mistresses and wears a beret. He is French, people." --Conan O'Brien "I don't know why people are surprised that France won't help us get Saddam out of Iraq. After all, France wouldn't help us get the Germans out of France!" ---Jay Leno "The last time the French asked for 'more proof' it came marching into Paris under a German flag." --David Letterman How many Frenchmen does it take to change a light bulb? One. He holds the bulb and all of Europe revolves around him. |

Actually, the full quote is:
"Going to war without France is like going deer hunting without an accordion. You just leave a lot of useless, noisy baggage behind." Which makes it even funnier. It has been credited to other people too, including Rumsfeld. Nobody knows who actually said it first. BTW...Here is some French History for you: Question: What is the only war that France has ever been truely victorious in? Answer: The French Revolution. Primarily due to the fact that their opponent was also..... FRENCH! |

Yes..I am aware he said that on Hardball, but there has been some speculation that the quote is not his. Here is my favorite french military statistic: The french have killed more Germans on the concorde than in all of their world wars. |

"Why are the streets of Paris lined with trees?"
"Because the German soldiers prefer to march in the shade." Pd, Ole Buddy, I think you need a new word...'moron' is so tired. :D |

PD, the entire thread is about making fun of people that don't agree with you... I think the French are wrong in the case of Iraq, that they are waffling for political and financial reasons...
Mike, where did you find this list? This has all the smell of a spin cycle routine... I assume there will be a russian one and maybe a turkish one as well? Alex |
PD, if Chirac would have added " failure of diplomacy" then it would be an accurate statement.... otherwise it is not.
Lets face it people, Iraq 20 years from now, 40 years from now will be a much better place then it is now. Te best way to get ahead is to go to ware with the US and lose.... Quote:

Oops two mistakes... i forgot to set email notification on here and i didnt mean Civil War i meant revolution (what a great start:( )
My point was going to be that the French aided the US gain independence from the British colony's by attacking them at sea and in their colony's thus preventing them reinforcing their troupes in the States... Ok so it wasn't for entirely altruistic reasons, but what war/international assistance is? (they just wanted to screw over their main strategic rivals - the Brits - and also make them lose most of their colony's). You could even argue that it helped shape the Free country you have today. Why are you all making fun of Chiraq?

Je ne comprend pas l'anglais. :moon:

Fraggle, I thought you meant the war of Independance.... but wanted to make sure.
France helped us a lot, we would not have won. We did appreciate it - the first generations of Americans wanted closer ties with France over England.... but over time we became closet to Englad - their Navy is what kept us out of trouble for hundred of years... and allowed us to keep the Monroe Doctrine. However, the French have not been on our side that often the past 100 years.... and surely not now. Chirac sees this as an opportunity to lead a rebellion and be a counterblance to US power.... it is a power play. ( that and he wants to hide his relationship with Saddam) Funny thing is, France is spending more time battling us, and fighting the US on all fronts rather then trying to make Iraq/Saddam come clean and get rid of all their weapons.... Guess they do not understand the concept! |
I understand what you are saying in a way but i think it is harsh and possibly swayed by a bit of propoganda (as we all are in a way) to say that because a country doesnt agree with US foreign policy. You could also argue that it is purely a means of protecting the integrity of the United Nations opinions.
I agree that Chirac is spending too much time arguing and less in diplomacy but i do respect that he is slowing the process up a little (which will not cause any problems) and may aid a diplomatic solution. Then again that coupled with the threat of war may also speed this process up! Allot of people are worried as to the possible terrorist ramifications if there IS and attack on Iraq also which has to be considered. As for the French in general i agree they do like to start power struggles/conflict (and they are very nationalistic) but, that is not to say that disagreeing is a bad thing. It simply opens up the debate more for rational discussion to find a mutually beneficial solution and better understanding. I just think a little more discussion and evidence would serve us all a bit better before Europe splits on this - which can be done without reducing pressure on Hussain. |

One more...just in... :)
"Raise your right hand if you like the French ... raise both hands if you are French." |
"You could also argue that it is purely a means of protecting the integrity of the United Nations opinions."
Using the words 'integrity' and 'United Nations' in the same sentence...isn't an oxymoron? |
