In your opinion which type of character is more essential to be written well for a tv show, book, or movie to be successful/interesting? Which do you think is more impoortant to driving the story and make it compelling?

Tam 01-27-2003 04:55 PM

The villan for me. The Hero is predictable no matter how you slice them in most cases (no pun intended in slicing them). The Villan however, gets your adrenaline pumping and makes you think and react. All you get with the hero is nice, sweet thoughts and tears in most cases. But that villan will make you want to jump thru the screen after him and whip his ass......... For ME, I think if the Villan isn't well written then 99% of the time, the movie isn't worth watching....... HAS to be done right.

This is just how I see it..... some may see it differently. You can write a bad hero role, but you better damn well not write a bad villan role, or you will lose me everytime. :awinky:

Nickatilynx 01-27-2003 04:56 PM

Well the bad guy obviously.

I like the Sheriff of Nottingham in Kevin Kosners "Robin Hood".

I like the bad guys as well, BUT,
The kind of bad guys like in Blazing Saddles.

:D

Tam 01-27-2003 05:09 PM

I like the ones that play with your head..... the ones similar to Ben Afleck's role in Changing Lanes.. someone who isn't bad, but by way of circumstances turns very ugly very fast. Or Robin Williams in Insomnia........ the headgame villan types. LOL

Hannibal Lector

I think they're both equally important. When EITHER is lacking is when you have weak stories (movies, TV shows, books, etc.) IMHO.

T-Rav 01-27-2003 05:25 PM

I personally like books/movies where the heroes and villians are very similar. Where the hero has traits of a villian and visa versa.

Or my favorite movie of all time "Fight Club" where the hero and the villian are one and the same.

I like it when things are mixed up a bit, and you are torn between the good guys and the bad guys...

SykkBoy 01-27-2003 05:26 PM

I love a good villian...

My favorite though are usually the over the top types, but there's something to be said for "real" villians, like Robin Williams in "One Hour Photo" or Micheal Rooker in "Henry: Potrait Of A Serial Killer"

Best villian of all time? hmmm, toss up between The Supreme Dictator from "Samson Vs. The Supreme Dictator From Outer Space" (there's something uber creepy about an old man with an eyeball painted on hs head and one of those paper Burger King crowns on top of his head) or The Alien Leader in "Bad Taste" (something to be said about old men who drink upchuck and turn humans into intergalactic fast food) and I agree hannibal Lecter is an amazing villian...oh shit and of course Kirk Douglas as The Villian in "The Villian"

Ahhhh.. you would aboslutely LOVE Garak from Deep Space Nine. The character was in only 39 of the 170+ episodes but is easily the most intruiging and best character I've ever seen written. The ultimate "shades of grey' character where you never knew what he was gonna do or why he was gonna do it. He constantly kept you guessing!! Sometimes he would help the federation and other times he would work against it. There's nothing like a character that can make you THINK!

This one was my favorite....... ONLY he could say it like this and pull off the total deviousness (is that a word) of that line......... I can see the smirk and evil wicked look on his face just thinking about it....... :rokk:

Woo hoo!! Vick opened up the quote aspect!! :okthumb:

Garak: Do you think that because we have lunch together once a week, you know me? You can't even begin to fathom what I'm capable of.

Bashir: I'm a doctor. You're my patient. That's all I need to know.

Garak: Wrong again. You need to know who you're trying to save.
The Wire

----------------------

Garak: "...and what I find interesting is how your mind ended
up casting *ME* in the role of a villain! ... To think,
after all this time, all our lunches together, you still
don't trust me. There's hope for you yet, doctor."
-- "Distant Voices"

------------------------------

Garak: The truth is usually just an excuse for a lack of imagination.
Improbable Cause

-----------------------------

Sisko: I thought the Bajorans bent over backwards to be polite to you, Garak.

Garak: Giving me a nametag that read "Elim Garak, former Cardassian oppressor" was hardly polite.
Things Past
--------------------------------

Odo: You'd shoot a man in the back?

Garak: It's the safest way, isn't it?
Call to Arms

--------------------------------

Worf: They are not interrogating you, Mr Garak. They are debriefing. There is a difference.

Garak: Not from where I'm sitting.
Favour the Bold

---------------------------------

"Lately I've noticed that everyone seems to trust me. It's really quite unnerving. I'm still trying to get used to it." (Deep Space Nine: "Empok Nor")

Ahhh...a fellow Trekkie...

Garak was by far the most intriguing character on Deep Space Nine. I loved the fact that you KNOW you can't trust him. That makes him even easier to deal with and you know what you are getting into every time.

More quotes from Garak:

"Really, Doctor. Must we always play this game? I'm no more a spy than you are --" -- Garak

"A doctor." -- Bashir (Cardassians)

--------------------------------------------------

"A bite on the hand is certainly worth saving a boy's life, wouldn't you say?" -- Bashir
"I suppose it depends on whose hand .... just joking, Doctor." -- Garak (Cardassians)
--------------------------------------------------
"I see I'm going to have to add the word pickpocket to your resume." -- Odo
"It's only a hobby." -- Garak (Things Past)

I think the maiden is the most interesting, driving character of a movie.

I don't like the players, I like the goal :)
