With James driving like a pro, eligibility questioned -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Associated Press CLEVELAND -- LeBron James is traveling like a professional player these days. And not just on the court. James, the nation's most hyped player and expected No. 1 pick in this year's NBA draft, is driving around Akron in a Hummer H2, a sports utility vehicle popular with many pro athletes. James' ride -- with a base retail price of nearly $50,000 -- has state high school officials wondering if the 18-year-old has jeopardized his amateur standing. "We have some concerns,'' said Clair Muscaro, commissioner of the Ohio High School Athletic Association. "The thing I'm concerned about is that it was (a) gift from the outside. ... When our schools see something like that, it throws up a red flag. It's different than a parent buying their son or daughter a small vehicle.'' [b][i][u]Click link at top for full article[b][i][u] |
Go look at the parking lot of ANY college ball player's dorms - $35K is the average price of the cars sitting there. Usually they have a "benefactor" purchase the cars for them so as not to be "paid" for playing. They're pretty sneaky

Even if what they say is true and his mom got it for him IMHO any parent who would buy their high scholl kid a Humvee with three tv's in it and a playstation system is a moron.

My kid went to an "uppity" school - his friends had Lexus', BMW's, Land Rovers, etc. One kid DID have a Hummer - he was a real geeky sort of kid that just happened to be dating the head cheerleader - after he got the Hummer....... :awinky:
Meanwhile, my child drove a 1990 Maxima with 200K miles on it :groucho: At least I didn't stress when it got scratched in the parking lot! Oh, and I agree 100% that the parents that buy these things for the kids are NOT thinking :headwall: Last edited by Peaches at Jan 13 2003, 04:35 PM |
This Lebrob James kid is probably going to sign one of the largest contracts in sports history as soon as he graduates high school. Can you imagine that? I have no idea what the kid's net worth is now, but my guess would be it is hovering around zero. lol
In a few months, the kid is going to be worth a hundred million or so. I can't imagine what it would feel like to be a high school kid and know that. It'll be interesting to see how he handles it all. |
