I swear to God, at least 4 out of 10 times I see 'congradulations' instead of 'congratulations' on websites, not just porn, but everywhere.

It has become my pet peeve and I think it is annoying. I mean, come on .. is it so hard to spell a word you've been hearing since your first birthday?

:nyanya:

Torone 12-06-2002 08:44 AM

Naughty,
You haven't read too many boards, have you? :agrin:
Believe it or not, the spelling on this board is above the 'net average. We've got some fairly well-educated people here. I was an Interscholastic League speller in high school (many, many years ago); and reading Internet posts, as well as search terms, is just plain scary.

Almighty Colin 12-06-2002 08:45 AM

There and their.

grammer.

While you're at it:

'your' and 'you're'

And a ton of others, but that congrats thing takes the cake (don't ask me where:) )

Not reading too many boards? Plenty, but boards are another thing, people write stuff fast on there (or at least I hope that's it).

I am talking bannerads, sponsorpages, or as I just saw it: On Drudge Report for crying out loud.

Oh well ....

Hey KC, back from the good old European continent?

Peaches 12-06-2002 10:43 AM

seperate is supposed to be spelled separate

I could care less is supposed to be I couldn't care less

I make mistakes all the time, but thankfully, it's usually because I'm tired, not that I don't know what's right. At least that's what I tell myself. :awinky:

jonas 12-06-2002 10:43 AM

won't mention any names, but i remember back in the ynot days someone would always post the word mabey. (maybe)

Peaches 12-06-2002 10:45 AM

Oh, and truely and arguement are supposed to be spelled truly and argument :gbounce:

Almighty Colin 12-06-2002 10:51 AM

If grammatical errors and misspellings are repeated enough they become rules instead of errors.

Nice post. I'm glad someone said it. LOL
Bad spelling is a pet peeve of mine as well. :P

Mutt 12-06-2002 12:33 PM

funny thread, the spelling and poor grammar on the Internet, some by very smart people amazes me.

The 'your' vs 'you're' thing is in many cases just laziness and as Colin says it's almost to the point where it's going to be accepted as common usage.

The funniest thing is when somebody flames another person with 'YOUR A FUCKEN LOOSER!'.

At the end of this thread I'll put them together in a list of the most egregious mispellings(sp?) commonly found on the Internet. You guys have already mentioned many of them.

Here are two more that drive me nuts.

INTELLEGENT..................arggggggggggggghhhhhh hhhhhh

this next one is spelled wrong at least 50% of the times I see it on the Net

REDICULOUS!!!

All that said, spelling, like handwriting, isn't a great indicator of somebody's intelligence.

I don't know why some people can't spell, might have something to do with early years at home and school, think it's one of those things if you get off to a bad start it stays with you. I was a reader as a kid, read the newspaper, books, anything, as soon as I learned how to read, spelling just came naturally, the more you see a word in print the more the proper spelling sticks in your head.

SykkBoy 12-06-2002 02:31 PM

and damnit, sick is supposed to be spelled sykk ;)))

Shok 12-06-2002 02:45 PM

Have you guys ever seen the show Street Smarts? It is SO pathetic. I can not believe how stupid people are.

I also can't believe how retarded most of the Playboy etc chicks are when they go on Howard Stern and play those Jeopardy games. It seems like these girls who are what the mainstream calls physically beautiful have stunted personality growth.

Mutt 12-06-2002 03:10 PM

it is stunning when Howard does those games with the models and actresses.

ever hear the one he did with Tori Spelling? More shocking considering she was sent to the best private schools and her father is very intelligent.

One of the questions to Tori was 'Name the capital of New York State?'

Tori after struggling for a minute answered 'New Jersey?'

Howard had Brooke Burke on yesterday, pissed that I missed it, she had been ducking him for years, i wanted to see what would happen.

I was in South Beach a few months ago and they were on the streets looking for people to be on the show. They came up to me and said "Hey, you look like a character. Would you like to be on "Street Smarts"? I said "So you think I look STUPID?" and laughed. We talked for a minute .. and then I said "I can't be on the show. I'd know all the answers." She says "Everyone says that". They asked me about 10 questions - one was "What was Einstein's first name?" I knew all the answers.

Anyway - they strongly encouraged me to either answer within a few seconds or make an answer up. Those are the rules. That's what they want you to do. You have to answer SOMETHING and at high speed that usually comes out funny. I would guess from watching some more people get interviewed that some people knew the answers and faked not knowing to get on the show.
