Well... what is your favorite movie of all time and why

to make it simpler, break it into genres

comedy
drama
sci-fi
horror
epic

Vick 01-28-2003 11:20 AM

Can't really break my favorite movies down into genre as some of mine don't really fit or they transcend genre but here goes .....
In no particular order

Silence of the Lambs
Pulp Fiction
Casablanca
Wizard of Oz
Godfather
Beauty and the Beast
Natural Born Killers

am sure I'm forgetting a few -
looking at that list ... none were made in the last 10 years - maybe I should get out more he he he

RawAlex 01-28-2003 11:29 AM

Let me see... top three in the video rack are:

Trainspotting
Natural Born Killers
American Psycho

Alex

Peaches 01-28-2003 11:44 AM

Ooh - lots of them. Here are some I can think of right off the bat:

Princess Bride - has some of the best lines ever
Shawshank Redemption - how the human spirit can and can't be broken
Casablanca - classic
Oklahoma - grew up listening to it on my Grandparent's Hi-fi, I have the CD in my car and will open all the windows and sing it loud (and VERY off key)
Forest Gump - just sweet
Toy Story 1&2 - clever-funny and technically impressive.

I know there's more :)

SykkBoy 01-28-2003 11:58 AM

It all really depends upon my mood, but in no particular order:

Glengarry Glen Ross - Amazing dialog and some of the best acting ever captured on screen. Having worked in boiler rooms, the dialog was so authentic that it was scary.
Memento - Great wroiting, good acting and I love unconventional storylines and story telling.
Requiem For A Dream - Ellen Burstyn's performance was an outstanding performance, one of the few times I ever got misty eyed during a movie "I'm going to be on telelvision" and a lot of the movie hit me hard the other day when I lost a good friend to heroin addiction (well, the heroin didn't kill him, rather the .357 he had aimed at his temple did).
Narc - Great acting, good writing, though a bit cliche, the acting and writing took it above the cliches.
The Exorcist - although it has lost some of it's punch over time, it still stands as a true horror classic and a damn scary ride.
Friday The 13th - The one that really brought slasher movies into the mainstream (for better or worse). It borrowed heavily from Mario Bava's "Bay of Blood" but reached a more "mainstream" audience.
Opera - Dario Argento is my favorite Italian director and one of my favorite directors of all time. His stories ramble on and his dialog isn't always so great, but visually, no one compares.
Reservoir Dogs - While most list "Pulp Fiction" as their favorite Tarrentino flick, I preferred this gritty, low budget offering. Steve Buschemi became one of my favorit actors after watching this movie.
A Clockwork Orange - Great acting, amazing dialog and visuals out the ass. I love to pop this in the DVD player and travel with me droogs through a bit of the ultraviolence ;)

MikeFold 01-28-2003 12:01 PM

epic:
Amadeus-Whacko Genius

drama/comedy
The Stunt Man-Peter O'Toole is classic

comedy:
The Big Lebowski-90 minutes of one liners
Animal House-'toga....toga..."

SciFi:
Matrix or Men In Black-Just cool

Other:
Tin Cup-The Underdog

Horror:
The Shining-Jack Nicholson Hands Down
Valentine- cleavage ((o;

Almighty Colin 01-28-2003 12:11 PM

This is pretty difficult and might depend on my mood but ..

All Star Wars movies
Pulp Fiction
Good Will Hunting
One flew over the Cuckoo's nest
Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon
The Butter Battle Book (Dr. Seuss flick)

Koyaanisqatsi - Godfrey Reggio.

The time elapsed stuff got a little over-played after this came out, but it is a beautiful film and it is anti-modern without being whinny or dim.

My Best Fiend - Werner Herzog

and any movie with sharks :(

PornoDoggy 01-28-2003 01:01 PM

comedy - Blazing Sadles; It's a Mad Mad Mad Mad World
drama - High Noon; Z (Greek); One Flew Over the Cukoo's Nest
sci-fi - Wrath of Khan (not a big sci-fi movie fan)
horror - The Shining
epic - The Longest Day; Dr. Zhivago
musical - Fiddler on the Roof;

TheEnforcer 01-28-2003 01:24 PM

Comedy- The Jerk with Steve Martin- absolutely hysterical from the opening line!! "I was born a poor black child."

Action- The Fugitive- Tommy Lee Jones and Harrison Ford at their best!

Adventure- Raiders of the Lost Ark- memorable from the opening sequence

Drama- Shawshank Redemption- best movie ever IMHO

Crime- Heat- Deniro and Pacino at their best

Animation- The Jungle Book- King Louie rocks!

Fantasy- tie between both LOTR movies.

Sci Fi- Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan- one of the best portrayals of a villian I've ever seen. Khan played by Ricardo Monteblan

Thriller The Game- good "mind fuck" type of movie!

War- We Were Soldiers- a Vietnam movie that finally got it right. (hardest category to choose)

Western- Tombstone- Val Kilmer rocks as Doc Holliday!

Romance/Chick flick- A Walk to Remember- as a guy you can watch and enjoy it and it doesn't make men look to be assholes.

Horror- Jaws- damn movie scarred me for life so it had to be good!! :zoinks:

Epic- Braveheart- great story

Werre you scarred for life by watching Jaws as a kid too?

I remember in the late 70's/early 80's being scared shitless if I got in a pool by myself, especially if it was at night. I lived in southern California where everyone had a pool so it happened a lot. Damn you Spielberg for screwing up my childhood pool fun!

Never mind that sharks swam in the ocean and not in suburban pools lol

Buncha babies! I lived in Jacksonville, FL at the time - we saw the movie on Saturday, went to the beach on Sunday (and yes, in the water :nyanya: )

The scariest movie to me was Twister - a tornado hit the dorm I was in when I was in college, before the movie came out, so I was already scared of them. I rarely have nightmares, but when I do, tornadoes are involved. I gained a very healthy respect for them that night and will never own a house w/o a basement :okthumb:

LOL, so I guess there's a plus in being old :bjump:

There was a Twilight Zone (or similar show) I saw when I was 6 or 7 and I'm STILL afraid of garbage disposals! :zoinks:

Zebra 01-28-2003 03:25 PM

I saw "The Incredible Mr. Limpet" when I was a kid and I have been scared shitless of Don Knotts since.

MikeFold 01-28-2003 03:40 PM

so no one ever looks at a shower drain and thinks about Psycho......

films,Alex?

FIGHT CLUB

I watched this movie, and it changed my view on how movies can be made. I watched it again. I did not sleep for 3 days. Absolutely brilliant.

I am Tyler Durden.

sarah_webinc 01-28-2003 04:17 PM

i just love movie overall but if I have to pick some here they are.

comedy - Clerks - great dialouge. This guy pulled this off with a limited budget and very little on screen action. True talent.

drama - LA Confidental - Tell me one thing that is wrong with this film.

sci-fi - Rocky Horror - okay so it isn't really sci fi but I am a huge fan and it has featured a lot in my life. I know it isn't a good film but I love cheesey stuff and you did say faveorite rather than best.
horror

epic - hmm..i'm not big into epics. Guess something like Godfather doesn't count?

Nickatilynx 01-28-2003 04:23 PM

sarah,

If you like clerks watch Bar None :)

But, Casino was a very good movie.

My picks:

Akira
Sexy Beast
Western World
The Ultimate Warrior - w/ Yul Brynner
The Warriors
Seven Samurai
5 Deadly Venoms
The Devil's Brigade
Princess Bride

I've got more, but that's enough.

Before Nick comes on and rips my picks, some of them aren't consider the best movies, in fact, alot of them suck. When I watched them, they imparted something special.
