What happens if you don't pay your taxes in Oz?
You get in trouble. Not paying for services I want and use that are provided by the government is theft I guess. Last edited by Joe Sixpack at Dec 2 2003, 12:39 PM |

Should you choose not to pay the percentage of taxes that goes to fund abortions because you are morally opposed to them, the government WILL come and get you. Your illusions of force and choice are interesting... What about people that might like to see homeless people on the sidewalk and more money in their bank account? You feel it is your right to impose on them YOUR desire not to see styrofoam coffee cups, through taxation for programs YOU believe in. Therefore, the religious right and you are on the same moral ground. Congratulations for joining them in their piety. |

There are a handful of movies I can watch more than once - Shawshank and Princess Bride are two I can think of off the bat, and I can watch repeats of West Wing for some reason, but the vast majority just bore me after the first time. I can't read ANY book more than once and I've tried.
Hmmm.. I know people like that. My dad is the same way. |

I think you could make a legitimate argument that YES, paying taxes for a war that was not strictly defensive in nature would be theft from people who did not support attacking another nation. Consistency is a bitch.....people should try it some time. |

Arguing about the Bible isn't something I plan to pursue. IMHO, the Bible means different things to everyone and for every reference you can show that says one thing, I can more than likely you find you another reference which will completely dispute it. :awinky: |

Ive read books solely on Mary Magdalene, and am also into the history owhat she practised. Here's a starting point. http://www.thewhitemoon.com/mary/magdalene.html If you can even read the whole thing. I have EVEn read the texts called "Gospel According TO mary Magdalene" Some more books on her? http://bookstore.religionbooks.us/subject_...y_magdalene.htm I have read i think over 7 books on her alone. I will NOT waste my time arguing about if she was or was not a prostitute with someone who clearly has no knowledge of the subject. go read and then we can have an intelligent discussion about Mary. |

See this is the problem, what is a legitimate use of tax money is something that is personal opinion. As far as I am concerned, socialised medicine is a legitimate use of tax money. I also support things like government funding for the arts. Here in Australia we have an entire television network (ABC) that is taxpayer funded and I don't know ANY Australian who wants to see that change because it is well worth the money. Legitimate use of tax money? Depends on what you believe. Last edited by Joe Sixpack at Dec 2 2003, 01:02 PM |

First of all, while the idea that taxation=theft may SOUND nice, in reality it's bogus. I don't even consider the money Bush is sending to the so-called faith based groups as 'stolen" from me. I sure as fuck don't like it - but it's not being stolen.
And I have never heard that Magdaline was a pagan princess, but I have heard that much scholoarship has been done on her in recent years, and it seems that the whole "Magdaline as prostitute" story may be a papist concoction from the 3rd century. |

If you don't think you should pay taxes then you should stop using government services and infrastructure. You can start by not driving on the roads or using the toilet because the sewerage system is government funded. For someone who is as full of shit as you are this may be difficult. They labeled her a prostitue to kill her name and what she did. After christs death, the disciples fought for control, and this should be of no surprise. As I have said, read, then we can discuss it. I have been fascinated with the Black Madonna for years, even painting virgin mary statues black for friends as gifts. |

Spouting off she was a possessed prostitute right off the bat to someone who has is genuinely interested in the topic isnt really going to get you far, or impress anyone. So now, not even the bible and its charachters can be intelligent discussion, this is why we could never have an intelligent discussion. You couldnt be part of an intelligent discussion. Youve made this quite obvious. Peaches, from now on, I wont even try to talk to you. It ALWAYS brings my IQ down when I do. Last edited by Fletch XXX at Dec 2 2003, 01:13 PM |

I am willing to entertain the concept that you can opt-out of any social safety net, including something as basic as police or fire support, just as I think you should be able to opt out of funding liberal arts. If you don't want to pay, no liberal television network for you! Similarly, if you don't believe in the concept of paying for the police dept, they don't come to your house if needed and don't investigate if you are robbed or shot in the face. As I've stated before, we have the unfortunate task of choosing between philosophical ideals and practical reality. My question has been, and continues to be for the purpose of this thread, HOW do people come to the conclusions and contradictions that they do? What force acts upon them to help them determine that THEY are right and others are wrong? |

:awinky:
I'm sorry ... I'm in the middle of DeGaulle's memoirs, 2/3rds of the way through a book on the Civil Rights movement from 1963-1965, am re-re-re-reading "The Cardinal and The Kremlin", and anxiously awaiting tonights' episode of NYPD Blue. I will, however put it on my to-do list, with at LEAST as high a priority as you do. |
