I can give you numberous examples of right-wing ideologues fabricating and distorting statistics in academia too. He says academic fraud doesn't exist, I say it is rampant. I believe it's more rampant in some areas than others, and those areas are the ones controlled by agenda-driven leftists, but that's my opinion, it would be hard to prove; whereas, proving that fraud exists is much easier. Summary: Idiot made stupid claim. I proved claim false with one example. I never said "all leftist academics" do anything. I had two exceptional neo-Marxian (their word) Philosophy Profs, Dr. Vogt -- an Austrian guy and Dr. Mu, a Chinese woman, who used were as biased as the day is long. Yet, they were/are great teachers and completely academically honest. They exposed me to post-modern thought. PD, Labret is a jackass, why would you want to take up for him?
Please consider it more a defense of my humble public school education. I find the idea that private school education is automatically of more value than that from a public school patently absurd. Of more value on a resume, and of great value in networking - of course. Frankly, the condescending arrogance that [labert] maintains in most of his posts isn't much different from yours in regards to public schools. Had I not read his posts I would have suspected private schools, perhaps Jesuits. |
ok, "hmmm's" are fine by me.
Doubting is GOOD for the Mind. and if I put a "hmmm's" in you and you look for MORE answers than the stats you posted and find the TRUTH yourself, I will NOT steal your pleasure of correcting the "academia" ;-)) LMK if you need my help in research, I have a few sources in mind, in Rusian, and I can help with translation. cheers! |

no, youre going on about if i do or dont think reading equates blah blah blah and that knowledge is not found in books. when all i did was say that i like to read a book more than once to make sure i grasp it, and in case i missed something. i find it hard to communicate with someone who couldnt read the Divine Comedy more than once. I said you will not find rampant fraud "within" academia. Had his book gone before a review, as in an academic journal, it never would have made it to market and you wouldnt be able to dance around with it. He was a dumbfuck that thought because he was not subject to the checks and balances he would receive within academia he could further his agenda. Academia smoked him out. If I started raping goats could you make the conclusion that goat raping is rampant in academia? This is becoming redundant. Last edited by [Labret] at Dec 2 2003, 11:01 AM |

We're lost souls - we don't know where we fit on the graph. :(
I went to a suburban public school that had two-hour comprehensive finals each semester. I had friends come back from their first couple of year at Princeton and MIT swearing that none of their finals to that point had been as difficult as what we had in our senior year in high school. My daughter graduated from an urban magnet school (in a class of 64) that sent about one-third of its graduates to Ivy League schools. Are these typical? Nope. But when you get right down to it, I firmly believe that you were right in an earlier post when you said that there are illiterates who have a far better grasp on reality than many of the most educated people I know. I've always operated under the (Mark Twain?) idea that I never let school interfere much with my education. Last edited by PornoDoggy at Dec 2 2003, 02:11 PM |

Besides, PD, I mostly use it as a barb -- I'm not nearly as elitist as I act like here. |

Logically, how do you disregard the moral standards of the conservative right while embracing those of the liberal left? You don't want the conservative right reaching into your life and telling you how you can access porn, who you can sleep with, what a woman can do with her body, etc....YET...you have no problem reaching into those conservative pockets to gather funds to "help the less fortunate"...even though they may disagree with YOU... The theory that YOU (liberal YOU) know what's right for society and that your OPINION that someone shouldn't lose everything over a "mistake" or "choice" they have made, and that taxpayers who may not share this same view should shut up and pay anyway, is in complete contradiction to the ire expressed at the conservative right. When you don't see anything wrong with one group of society FORCING their ideals on you ("I see no societal problem with helping our less fortunate" - Sykk), yet you moan and complain incessantly at the unfairness of the OTHER side trying to force THEIR morality on you, you walk the slippery slopes of a contradiction you can't escape from.
As Sykk appears to be unavailable for response at this time, how about another liberal taking a stab at the above? If you agree with Sykk that it's okay to force others into your ideals (helping the less fortunate thru the forced taxation of others), how do you logically admonish the conservative right for wanting to do away with porn? Both sides believe they are doing what's best for society in general (how convenient for them). There is no difference in either argument. How do you justify the contradiction? PD? Alex? Todd? |

Words are words. They are used for particular emphasis, and in the appropriate forum (HERE), they are not only appreciated for their color, but for their ability to convey strong meaning.... "You are an imbecile" is not nearly as powerful as "you are a FUCKING imbecile...."
:okthumb: |

Quite honestly, I rarely read books to "learn". While there ARE some which I enjoy learning from, I almost always read for strictly for entertainment. My attention span is short so magazine, newspaper, internet articles hold my interest better and teach me more than reading a book would do.
Even reading for entertainment purposes I often read things twice. Hell, I have books I've read 15-20 times because I enjoy them so much. |

Why do you use "forced" as if it's really not by force?
Because it's no more "forced" than me being "forced" to pay for something that I walk out of a store with. In Australia my taxes go towards lots of things I like - parks, roads, medical care for all, libraries, art galleries etc. I am getting something for my money. Hell, I don't even mind paying for welfare. What do I get out of that? I don't have to see people with styrofoam coffee cups begging for money on the streets of my city. Sure I end up contributing to things I don't like but I'd still rather pay for welfare than warmongering. Last edited by Joe Sixpack at Dec 2 2003, 12:33 PM |

There are a handful of movies I can watch more than once - Shawshank and Princess Bride are two I can think of off the bat, and I can watch repeats of West Wing for some reason, but the vast majority just bore me after the first time. I can't read ANY book more than once and I've tried. |
