Just because your parents are still together and you see them often doesn't mean that there is no chance of abandonment issues. Actually, your views of marriage and family speak loudly of your unhappiness with your childhood and deep-seated issues of abandonment and neglect.

Oops, missed that one.

I would think my strong family bonds and being around their happy marriage for 18 years would have a positive impact on me.

My views on marriage and children are a result largely of witnessing the failure of others and the anthropological / sociological theories of why they even exist. Study them and you will see just how arbitrary and absurd the institution of marriage and nuclear family is. Both concepts are relatively new and are not a natural occurrence amongst humans.

Why would I have abandonment issues if my parents are still married and I still see them often?

As a student of sociology your response here baffles me.
It is not simply the physical presence of your parents that prevent feelings of abandonment, but also emotional attachment.
Your father could be attending to all of his responsibilities and duties as a father and husband, but still leave you feeling as if he doesn't care a thing about you.
Your mother could stay home and care for you night and day, making sure you have food to eat and clean clothes to wear, but still make you feel as if you're unwanted.

Just because your parents are still together and you see them often doesn't mean that there is no chance of abandonment issues. Actually, your views of marriage and family speak loudly of your unhappiness with your childhood and deep-seated issues of abandonment and neglect.

I am not a psychologist. I deal with culture. Perhaps if my area was more of juvenile delinquency I would understand abandonment as some sort of predictor of deviant social behavior, and then it would fall into my area. But as it sits now my emphasis is in popular culture.
I really suggest you study it, then. You'd most likely find it fascinating.
Culture is shaped and defined by the people, and people form their realities based on perceptions from childhood.

Quick example for the holidays - kids who were brought up in homes where holidays were a time for large family gatherings and feelings of belonging to something larger than themselves often pass on those same traditions and rituals to their children, forming a macro-culture within the culture of society.

As families become larger and people have more children (what we see happening now), these types of celebrations become more commonplace, and incrementally that macro-culture expands to become society's culture itself. It becomes expected to "go home for the holidays" and partake in large family gatherings.

We're moving back into this direction now, away from where we have been for the past twenty years or so; with smaller families and children far away from their parents, not returning for the holidays, etc. These people (on average) were brought up where career was more important than family and the entire mindset of the "me" generation left children feeling alone and unwanted, especially during the holidays when they'd watch tv movies of everyone around the christmas dinner table. Those kids grew up and changed our culture for nearly 20 years, and now it's changing back as they get older and less focused on themselves.

The institution of marriage is a relatively new concept if you look at history from the time that we were running around in animal skins communicating in guttural noises. :awinky:

However, we've evolved far beyond that and comparing then vs. now is unrealistic. If we're to make any changes, or even learn anything, we have to look at a smaller timeline.

Speaking of making changes - if you are so unhappy with the country and the people in it, why just give up and leave? Why not try to make a change? Teach, run for office, form grassroots actions for the party that is closest to matching your "vision" of what America should be?

Simply leaving is rather defeatist, don't you think?

Coupling is nothing new no. Some sort of heavenly sanctified bond resulting in a subservient other is relatively new. The creation of adolescence, the idea of the housewife, and the myriad of other institutions that have sprung up as a result of their creation is only a result of industrialization. Very new.

Simply, I do not want to waste my time on Americans. They have squandered their inheritance and they will wallow in their own ignorance and suffer the consequences. I welcome it, I do not want to prevent it.

I debated becoming a teacher, turning out generations of little Marxists, but it would be fruitless. I would much rather watch nature take its course. They may come around, but it is going to come at a very serious price.

Like Forest mentioned earlier, there are many up and comers so to speak on the world stage. Dirt poor, highly educated, with a desire to make a change. I would much rather take my chances with them. Much more rewarding.

Funny, a couple of Maoists told me 30 years ago that I was "of the type" that they would shoot first too. As to who would or wouldn't get shot, I just want you assume that I'm anti-gun/anti-violence because I'm left of center.

I know, that is a common theme for you in your critique of me. Dont understand it, dont much care either. Its pure conjecture, its not like I am going to run into the street and shoot the next hick I see to prove otherwise.

True though, I probably wouldnt want such a hands on approach. I think the Chechens and their remote work is brilliant. Puts the terror back in terrorism, without the up close mess.

Why would I go to Chechnya?

I like the way Al Queda operates but I sure as hell wont be tracking them down anytime soon. I get giddy when I think about the ballet that is a Palestinian suicide martyr, but you wont find me in the west bank anytime soon.

Madman drummers bummers and Indians in the summer with a teenage diplomat
In the dumps with the mumps as the adolescent pumps his way into his hat
With a boulder on my shoulder feelin' kinda older I tripped the merry-go-round
With this very unpleasing sneezing and wheezing the calliope crashed to the ground

Some all-hot half-shot was headin' for the hot spot snappin' his fingers clappin' his hands
And some fleshpot mascot was tied into a lover's knot with a whatnot in her hand
And now young Scott with a slingshot finally found a tender spot and throws his lover in the sand
And some bloodshot forget-menot whispers daddy's within earshot save the buckshot turn up the band

Vick 11-24-2003 12:31 PM

Some brimstone baritone anticyclone rolling stone preacher from the east
He says: "Dethrone the dictaphone, hit it in its funny bone, that's where they expect it least"

And some new-mown chaperone was standin' in the corner all alone watchin' the young girls dance
And some fresh-sown moonstone was messin' with his frozen zone to remind him of the feeling of romance

Vick 11-24-2003 12:31 PM

Some silicone sister with her manager's mister told me I got what it takes
She said I'll turn you on sonny to something strong if you play that song with the funky break
And go-cart Mozart was checkin' out the weather chart to see if it was safe to go outside
And little Early-Pearly came in by her curly-wurly and asked me if I needed a ride

Oh, some hazard from Harvard was skunked on beer playin' backyard bombardier
Yes and Scotland Yard was trying hard, with a calling card,
he said, do what you like, but don't do it here
Well I jumped up, spit in the air, fell on the ground, asked wich was the way back home
He said take a right at the light, keep going straight until right, and then boy you're on your own

Yes, and the avatar said blow the bar but first remove the cookie jar, we're gonna teach those boys to laugh too soon

when I was 14, there was a bully in school who was getting toi me every chance he had...untill one day, I lost it completelly and dropped him on the floor, in front of his entire class and was stopped by my 2 class mates after his face looked like a blown up tomatoe...

NOW I know what I can and can't do...

And do you have faith in God above
If the Bible tells you so
Do you believe in rock 'n roll
Can music save your mortal soul

I advocate nothing short of a bloody revolution where I can drag people like you into the streets and dump a round into the back of your head.

IRL you don't have the sack for it

On a message board you can say it for fun and a reaction

IRL I have the feeling you'd be hiding deep in the old folks smell
:biglaugh:

Never was sure how to respond to conjecture such as this, esp after Serge already said it and I replied to it. I suppose I can kneejerk and threaten to bury a screwdriver into your skull, but that would be silly.

Much the same way that if your old ass was ever standing before me I can assure you the last thought on your mind would be sticking your "foot up my ass". Cut back on the geritol gramps.

manfred man and floyd. Total nightmare.

You are lost ah ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha

It's Springsteen and in this case the writing is phenomenal
Do you get the rhyming scheme (and the couplets)?

Much less the tendering of subject matter

The funnier part is you don't know how young I am ah ha ha ha ha ha

I'd love to see the post you edited, do you have the sack to bring it back?
funny, google says differently.

Manfred, Springsteen, all suck so in the end it doesnt matter. Lyrics by: Bruce Springsteen

And while Lennon read a book of Marx
The quartet practiced in the park
And we sang dirges in the dark
The day the music died
We were singin' ...

Bye-bye, Miss [Labret] Pie
Drove my chevy to the levee
But the levee was dry
And them good old boys were drinking' whiskey and rye
Singin' this'll be the day that I die

You're wrong. Springsteen penned "Blinded by the Light" in 1973 on his first album "Greetings from Asbury Park" - actually a very well written album - I don't much care for Springsteen's later work
Manfred Mann later had a hit with their cover of it (around 1979 I believe)

ah ha ha ha ha ha

So bring back your edited post

Wow... miss a weekend - miss a LOT! I promise never to be AFK this long again. Whew! What a LOT of reading - and well worth it!

Good thread guys... oh and Vick, thanks for clarifying what that "thing" was in your avatar. Ewwww. And... I like your NEW avatar. Nice change! The psycho clown was scaring me way before the creepy turkey leg ever did.

The new one is Professor Snape in his classroom, I actually bear a slight resemblance to Snape currently

It's bad form to make physical threats on a message board, no body needs keyboard warriors

That being said I guess we won't know unless it ever happens IRL
and that would be a very poor choice on your part

Vick, it's ALL in the adrenalin...
I once lifted me ex's ex husband who was 200 pounds more than me and threw him out of the door...

the ONLY way to find what one can or can't do is...do it.

Yeap - that and how bad do you want it or how much does it mean to you

We've all seen overachievers who achieve because it means that much to them :awinky:
