Not to be rude, but I thought Melissa was a scammer?

This guy calls you a scammer - that's enough for me.

Someone that has the balls to say what's on their mind, whether I agree or not, will always get my attention.

Despite my hanging around at Oprano since it first opened the doors of it's original flat board, I don't know if I really feel like Oprano "family".

More like the annoying neighbour who won't stop bothering you. B)

Chris -

You're a good neighbor (albeit an evil one - lol).... in fact, you're partially responsible for getting me to like Canadians again after all those years of being jaded by South Park propaganda. lol

Seriously.... you're part of the family - as much as any of the rest of us. We all bring different things to the weekly dinner table here - different ingredients to the "gumbo" as they used to say - and to omit any of the spices would be to ruin the entire recipe.

I'm glad I took the plunge and made Oprano my home-base board when I did - it definitely helped to open my eyes and "de-program" me from my old "affiliations" in the industry. I started over from scratch, giving everyone a clean slate and I'm very happy that I did. It's made a huge difference in the way I see things and the people I do business with. Oprano was a big part of that. Each and every poster here (even the crazy pervo uncles) were key in making that happen.

Another definition of family I guess - the ones who help you see the truth and help you get back on your feet and on your way again... without letting your past poor judgements of character stand in your way or change how they feel about you.

As witnessed by the shrinking show size in Las Vegas and the lengthy thread on whats wrong with AVN... this business is consolidating. If you dont want to be squeezed out then maybe you should not only know what family is as well as practice from day to day in your business.
Well said Gonzo - I thought this should be repeated. Well said.

Ive meant to come back to restimulate this thread but there really wasnt any reason to do so. So I will distill some comments..

One of the founding principals for Mike and Serge was simply

"The Family that does business together"

Its something that I think of each time I go to purchase hosting, content, etc etc.

As Anth said..."family ... my peers who can be trusted with my business as well as my friendship."

I know that services/goods I have purchased over the past year has been bought pretty much from only people from this resource.
Likewise with my traffic. I can tell you that the bulk of my traffic has gone to sponsors that have supported Oprano. AEBN is a good example of that. I dont have to worry about the rules changing or the latest way they do some creative accounting to reduce what they pay out. My check from them has consistantly grown. And in some cases with less traffic.

By in large our long term sponsors are ones that I can trust with my traffic as well as my friendship.

I would encourage each of you to seek out those that provide services and are active on Oprano. Weve started a seperate forum for up and coming people in our industry such as Nick Pappageorgio to let you know what it is they do.

When I was actively building free sites I always looked at sponsors to see what they had that I could leverage by including them in the design or the concept before it was built. Its resulted in some nice dividends as well.

One of our long time family members is about to put a major push on their new marketing effort. We are awaiting the artwork and then we will be putting on a major push for this company. I urge you to look closely at how they have revised what they are doing to rebrand to make you more cash. If you have a paysite this should be a MUST in adding to your members area.

As witnessed by the shrinking show size in Las Vegas and the lengthy thread on whats wrong with AVN... this business is consolidating. If you dont want to be squeezed out then maybe you should not only know what family is as well as practice from day to day in your business.

That being said... in the following months of this year we plan to expand the Oprano Family network to have our fingers in every aspect of this business. Nick and I are making good on our Dec 1st promise of Family, Honor, and the reawakening of Old School profits. While others are running around sucking on glass bottles and trying to copy yet another business model , we move forward.

The last ride has begun.... are you going to be left behind this time?

That is very interesting Gonzo. But I have to say, this business in its present form is very, very young. I am not quite sure why such a young business would have a last ride. I kind of smile when I hear expressions like "in the day" and "old school" for something that happened less than a decade ago. A lot of that stuff only worked because of the time and the naivety of both the consumer and the suppliers. I have no problem with the progression of business, but solid "old school" real world business practices, I feel, are going to become more prevalent and relevant in the next couple of years. I think the key is honesty for long term success. A fairly easy concept to understand, and a fairly easy concept to practice. "Old School Internet" went well over the top and has eroded consumer confidence and alerted folks like the ftc. How do you see addressing ftc and consumer confidence in the near future?
This was strangely overlooked. Gonzo, its an easy answer. Where exactly do you see the future of this business?

DUH. That's why we are referring to it as 'the good old days' and 'old school' - the time before we had to care about real work business ...

To answer the blatantly obvious ... In the same way every other business does it ... by changing business models, and operating like real world business does. You are talking as if that's a difficult thing to do ... give us some credit :awinky:

What is family?
If you have to ask if ... you probably aren't

Nah it wasnt overlooked it was ignored.

You always seem to want me to answer for the unethical billing practices of the past. When I refer to back in the day it was when I was getting checks in the mail and doing processing thru a floral company. There was no Ibill there was no CCBill... and Epoch/Paycom came along a lot later too.

The only spamming I personally was guilty of came off of a requested listserv or a mailing group. Them was the good old days I refer to...cuz back in the day people requested the email. Yahoo was a mailing list "back in the day".

Your version of the electronic biz may be very very young .... mine predated registering a domain name by at least 7 years.

I dont know why you constantly want to hold me personally responsible for whats fucked up in this business but you seem to always suggest I had something to do with it.

I didnt.

Let me distill and crystalize this for you once and for all.

We were the group of computer nerds that stacked what you know as the building blocks of the net like kids playing with their ABC blocks.

When this technology was emerging the big debate wasnt how to scam consumers out of bucks or to install "creative marketing" disguised spyware on pcs instead the big debate was...."What was the killer app going to be when using the internet."

Can you guess what it ended up being?

Finally.....
Not a great answer, but an answer nevertheless. But you never addressed the question about where this is going. That was then and this is now. I see no real solution to the problems you guys seem to be having. A lot of in the day stuff that is totally, and I do mean totally irrelevant to how to make money today. Gonzo, I have seen you pitch one too many great plans just around the corner. Well this is the corner. What exactly is your intention? This board is a good start, but the ffn thing will never make you a nickle. It is just another fat filled, doughnut. Up to you. But cruising for a heart attack aint a lot of fun nor is it profitable. But we all really know that.

amusement. And also. 99 per cent of the people on this board really need a reality check. 25 per cent are thick as a sack of nails. You know that as well as I do.

To know where you going you have to know where you came from.

Your good at asking all of us how we are going to do this and that for the future.
You have yet to say how your made you millions and how you have an accordian and xylophone and tuba attached to your passport. All Ive seen is a feeble attempt to ridicule Mike and Serge who have made theirs and are enjoying it.

Based on the sites that Serge dropped in here a month or two ago your just another dog looking for a bone. The future is my own and what I do with it is my business.

The Fat Fucking Nobody Think tank is availible for hire if your lacking initiative and creative resources.

I'm appealling it.

Personally I paid them.

And in fact , I will bet you I PAID more in taxes this year than you grossed.

I can substantiate what I say...you NEVER do.

You wanna start up with me again?

You are trying my patience and the patience of everyone else on this board...keep it up and I will ban you.

:)

Well, you just appeal it kiddo. Because, like someone said earlier, its what you put in the bank. Please ban me if you must. Because a little sanity around here seems to hurt. Why do you feel so threatened? Money talks and all this bullshit just walks.

Oh hell yes, I dont like flaps or too much hair....either one ruins the experience IMHO

spazlabz 01-18-2005 12:23 PM

Let me preface this by saying I do not exspect to be viewed as family on this or any board. My trips to all of them are infrequent at best.
That being said, I think there are most definitely two types of definitions for family needed here.

1) actual REAL family.......by blood. As this is a personal thing, theres no need to define it. either you hold it sacred or you don't and my definition of it would be meaningless to you

2) Business family. I consider 2 people I have met over the past 7 or so years in this business to be my own personal business family. they know who they are and if they don't then one of them can shove those tasteless donuts right up his bunger heh heh. I have only two not because I am distant or distrusting of other people. Quite the opposite. But because those are the only 2 in all this time that has taken the time to get to know me, and that I have gotten to know. Either of these guys I could go months and months without having any contact with and one phone call and it was like no time has passed. They are also guys that anything I am doing, or any knowledge that I may obtain, I think if it would benefit them. And if so, I make it a point to make them aware of it. If they ask for a 'favor' and it is within my power to do it, I will do it and they owe me nothing. Friends or family don't owe, you do because you want to, not because you exspect anything in return.
Now to the non lovie dovie shit. These are also the guys I would most like to see profit other then myself, guys that I know I can tell my business secrets to and they will keep their mouths shut. Guys who will cut me in on a good deal if they, me and anyone else involved with it can profit. And these are guys i MOST want to do business with. They are also the ones who can tell me to shut my freaking pie hole if i am outta line and the ones I can call stupid mofos if they are messing up.

I would like to have a lot more people in this industry that I have relationships like this with, but the fact of the matter is, with everyones individual personalities taken into account, there is a very limited number of people that any of us can really have this kind of friendship with. As soon as ya start to number them higher and higher, the lower the value of each becomes.

so sayeth a spaz! heh heh
