good taste, from this director you'll also enjoy, in this order, happiness, love liza, and storytelling. go ahead and netflix em'

:awinky:

holy shit, something you and I agree on...."Welcome To The Dollhouse" just narrowly missed my top 5 and "Happiness" is a tough watch, but fucking brilliant

I also loved Requeim For A Dream and Pi, but those are way on the artsy fartsy side for most popcorn munchers...
thats tod soloenz, love liza was weitten and directed by phillip seymore hoffmans brother.

as for directors

David Lynch
Paul Thomas Anderson
The Hughes Brothers
The Coen Brothers
David Mamet
Wes Anderson
Alan Ball
Cameron Crowe
Amy Heckerling
Spike Lee
Daron Aronofsky

And notables, Ron Howard, Robert Redford, Clint Eastwood, and Sean Penn as

Do I see no John Wayne flicks either?

Rooster Cogburn - great interplay between Wayne and Kathrine Hepburn

That's a great movie - watched it recently on one of the classic movie stations. Not a big Wayne fan myself ... I acutally liked him more in a whole series of B-flick seafarer movies than I did in most of the big-budget films he made later.

Sykk ... please tell me you are talking about the original Mummy, not the one made in the 90s.
I'm almost offended you asked me that ;-))

of course the original Universal classic :-)

in fact, my early Father's Day present:

I know, was just agreeing with pullpills on the list of great movies :)

Good list of filmmakers there.

I'ma huge fan of the Coen Brothers and Wes Anderson is amazingly brilliant. It took a couple watches of "The Royal Tennebaums" to really enjoy the nuances of the dialog of that movie.

fantastic.... great irish mob movie before irish mob movies were cool.

There manipulation of noir and oddball comedy, with subpop references and snappy dialogue, along with the most memorable juxtapositioning of themes make their movies so memorable and rewatchable

My list constantly changes...but 5 that are always in my top 5, 10, 15, etc.:

Glengarry Glen Ross
A Clockwork Orange
Texas Chainsaw Massacre
O Brother Where Art Thou (this has quickly become one of my favorites with repeat viewings)
Bad Taste

I'd have to try to fit The Exorcist in there somewhere too, but I've been enjoying the repeated viewings of OBWAT too much.....

Can't believe someone else thought of clockwork orange! (must be a wyoming thing lol)

Mine are:

Uncommon Valor
Frequency
Aristocats (gotta have one disney movie!)
Clockwork Orange
Tie between: Sound of Music, Grease, Hello Dolly, Oliver (the original one) & Ghost (chick flicks, I know, I know - and I'm a sucker for musicals)

:purpdance:

chodadog 05-01-2004 01:58 AM

How could i have forgotten Dr Strangelove and Fight Club.

So there's my five.

The Shawshank Redemption
Good Will Hunting
Amelie
Dr. Strangelove
and Fight Club

XXXPhoto 05-01-2004 04:07 AM

Agree top 5 is impossible... Besides, you know my top choice Vick... lol...

Here are some that haven't been mentioned... Aside from any adversion one might have to 'spaghetti westerns'; there isn't any on list not worth owning...

You might have never heard of it:
Suckers

Closetland (tough to find, but nice mindfuck movie)

Great Black and Whites:

Witness for the Prosecution
Raisin in the Sun
The Caine Muntiny
Maltese Falcon
To Kill a Mockingbird
12 Angry Men
The Dirty Dozen

Old Movies but in color:
Cool Hand Luke
The Great Escape
In the Heat of the Night
The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly
Fistful of Dollars
Hang'em High
For a Few Dollars More
Two Mules for Sister Sara
Chinatown

Loved it.

Almighty Colin 05-01-2004 05:06 AM

"It's a Beautiful Life", another favorite.

SykkBoy 05-01-2004 01:38 PM

I can't believe I forgot "School Of Rock" (which my kids watch daily)
I normally hate these kind of movies, but Jack Black was so amazing, the kids weren't the typical annoying whiny kids (and the fact they played their own instruments and did it well) and the music was great. It also spoke to my inner failed musician.

aeon 05-01-2004 08:50 PM

One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest
Terror in Tiny Town (only for those that do/used to smoke pot)
Masque of the Red Death (Vincent Price rules - especially doing poe)
The Good, The Bad, & The Ugly (all the leone spaghetti westerns)
Blade Runner

so hard to decide...
North by Northwest
Double Indemnity
Reservoir Dogs
The Birds
Stir Crazy
The In-Laws
MASH
A Clockwork Orange (they pussied out burgess's book or it would be a top - burgess is one of/if not the greatest literary figure of the 20th century...twas BS to rape a great novel like kubrick did)
Cool Hand Luke
SOB
Dr. Strangelove
Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back
Full Metal Jacket
The Hustler
The Shining
Kelly's Heroes
Going South
Animal House
Apocalypse Now
Which Way is Up
The Last Detail
La Dolce Vita
Mr. Frost
Flim Flam Man
and on and on...(include any noir into this category - the maltese falcon, citizen kane, touch of evil, blue dahli)

Damn this is harder than I thought, but here's some films I can watch over and over...

Ferris Bueller's Day Off
Heat
Face Off
Dirty Harry
Scarface

Any film with Al Pacino, Robert De Niro, Nicolas Cage or Adam Sandler (shits and giggles).

And I've got a thing for Sandra Bullock as well :D

After reading all that.... I'll go to the movies with you I think Trev ;-)

The Man With 2 Brains is my favourite movie of all time though... how do feel about Steve Martin?

The movie I recall blowing me away more than any other at the time I first saw it was Mad Max 1

Edd 05-02-2004 02:33 PM

This is a hard one, Vick - and these are just off the cuff - If I sit and think about it I always end up with WAY more than 5! In no particular order:

Bladerunner
The Trouble with Harry
Miller's Crossing
Name of the Rose
Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead

And no, Dr Guile - I've included no anime - thats a totally seperate list!

Jim 05-02-2004 02:41 PM

Godfather
Scarface
Goodfellas
American Grafitti
the sting

I think Steve Martin is excellent! One of my favs is dead men dont wear plad. :okthumb:

Mad Max :rokk:

This should have been a top 500 movies thread :D

Peaches 05-04-2004 08:19 AM

Watched 21 Grams the other night. It doesn't hit my top 5, but it's worth recommending! :okthumb:

SykkBoy 05-04-2004 02:47 PM

I just saw "The Cooler" last night with William H. Macy and Alec Baldwin...damn good flick, could easily end up in my top 25 (I generally have to watch a movie more than once to place in amongst the top).

Two actors I really enjoy, acting their asses off and the extremely sexy Maria Bello.....can't beat that with a stick

DAMNMAN 05-04-2004 02:48 PM

Here's 6 (Just to be different)

The Man Who Would Be King
Pulp Fiction
African Queen
Quills
Excalibur
House of 1000 Corpses

I hate Alec Baldwin, the man, but when ths guy is on the screen and on his game, he owns that screen.

How many other actors could dominate a movie and only be on screen for about 15 minutes (as in "Glengarry Glen Ross")? His performance was about the only good thing in "Malice" and here in "The Cooler" he plays the asshole really well.

No Atlanta for me.

The boy is now almost 3 years old. (and what a handful he is)
He's a computer geek already, logs in with his own name and password and he plays educational (mostly) video games for hours on end.
