Funnily enough the EXACT SAME people I tend to talk to before I get back in the Limo and return to my luxurious appt or /The Ritz/Shangthai /Oriental/etc

You are making a lot of assumptions about socio-economic status and language abilities that are incorrect.

but unlike the Europeans I grew up in a country that shares no land borders with other nations at a time where there wasn't a big emphasis on learning a second language.

bitterness , jealous ,whining and excusing your own lack of knowledge all in one phrase....

Very very well done! :)

There is no bitterness, jealousy or whining in that sentence.

You're BITTER because you never had the opportunities of the "Europeans" to learn a language

You are therefore JEALOUS of them

You WHINED about it by posting it here

Thank you for accepting that you were making excuses for your lack of knowledge.

;-))))[/b][/quote]
I am not bitter because I didn't have the opportunity to learn a foreign language. I did. This is why I know some German. But the opportunity wasn't there before Year 9. Things here have changed since.

So consequently I am not jealous of the Europeans although I do envy their language skills.

Nor am I whining about it. Merely stating the facts.

That's the trick

as a wise man once told me ....

if you can keep them on the + side of the ledger .......

Edit - it was also the man who taught me to appreciate Bourbon
When he passed away a few months back I was at his bedside with a glass in hand
It was like Picasso's famous last words
"Drink to me, drink to my health, you know I can't drink anymore"

Hell he's probably had more harrowing and interesting experiences in 12 hours than Joe had in 3 months. Monkeys attacking him, locals dancing with him after wild motorcycle rides and taking all of his money - crazy stuff.

throw some more stones at the hard working rich people who chose something different.

Do I wanna bet? No thanks. You may well have travelled more than me. If so, congratulations. I respect well travelled people, particularly those who do it independently and at ground level instead of staying at the Hilton and doing guided tours.

I've travelled through 28 countries. Spent well over a year in total on the road.

Lots more to see of course but I'm not doing too badly for 34.

Joe,
I did both and can honestly say:
you see/learn 3 times more on the guided tours than on your own.

have you ever taken any decent guided tours?

Tours with your "uts group" not counted.
