No offense intended here, but if we have no idea of what he is talking about, then perhaps Serge or you could enlighten us. Otherwise it is kind of obvious unless there is some sort of secret code and only you guys have the freekin decoder ring. It was written in pretty plain English.

It helps to cut down the roving idiot factor by about 99.99%...unfortunately, it seems to generate an abundance of like-minded thought; which is not so terrible a climate to do business in but I'm guessing would get rather mundane for a general chat board like Oprano. The Labret's of the world cannot flourish under such conditions, which lowers the entertainment value considerably. I don't see a need for password protection when it's so easy and quick to lock the morons out.

RawAlex 04-03-2004 02:41 PM

Serge, you can hear it if you listen closely. It's the sound of the theme song music coming up, seconds before the closing credits run up the screen. Boards, the adult business as we all knew it, the whole thing is going away as fast as the words can flow up the screen.

What has happened is that this has evolved into a mature business. There is little in the way of evolution or "new ideas" at this point because most paths have been tried and exploited to their very limits. Look at webmaster boards, we went from 1 to 2 to 3 to hundreds. Out of those hundreds, few are worth the effort to even bookmark.

It's been played out pretty hard.

As a purely social exercise, the boards are fine. Oprano is one of the best "no business business boards" around, where some of the smartest people in our industry come together and discuss all manner of things. I don't see where this creates value for sponsors, and I rarely see this creating a ton of new business, but it does work after a fashion.

Figuring the time you spend driving traffic here, do you really make any money that is worth it? Is it just an ego thing, proof that you can? Sometimes even leading the mice to the cheese gets dull, pointless.

Do what you think is right. Look at it as a business, and honestly consider if you want to be in business. If not, find the ways that you can have fun with your fun...

..... and the days of vanity
Went on forever
And he saw his days burn up
Like paper in fire

Paper in fire
Stinkin´ up the ashtrays
Paper in fire
Smokin´ up the alleyways

Who's to say the way
A man should spend his days
Do you let them smolder
Like paper in fire

There´s a good life
Right across the green fields
And each generation
Stares at it from afar

But we keep no check
On our appetites
So the green fields turn to brown
Like paper in fire

Alex, keen observations, indeed.

to answer your question,
YES, Oprano did make over $2 mils in almost 3 years (in July)

I don't see where I'd be able to make so much doing so little in the definitions of "real work" and enjoying myself tremendously.

It still gets a tad shy of $20,000 a month,
we are not talking dead corpse here.

If money were my only object,
I wouldn't be starting this thread today and keep banging sponsors ad naseum like everybody else.
but...as I always said of late,
you can't take money with you, ONLY memories and the water from the toilet doesn't taste the same as Pelligrino, even though, BOTH waters quench the thirst.

I'm sure you getting my point.

Buff 04-03-2004 03:02 PM

Were this my board and were I facing the problems you describe, I would try to drop those aspects of the board which attract the vulgar masses and add new features which would continue to cater to the bright people whose company you enjoy.

Perhaps add some news feeds to the main page. Customizable weather. Maybe even turn the whole board into a Board/Portal. Add some stuff that no one else has -- put the national debt clock in the corner. Rotate some random "facts" into the front page -- have them change with every refresh. For instance, it might read "Did you know that right now there are [x] number of employees at the IRS." or "The average worker works until May [20th] of each year just to pay his taxes."

I have a lot of ideas of what you might add to draw intelligent eyeballs, but I am heading to the Quarter with Crystal to go enjoy the beautiful weather right now.

Love,
Buff

I am shocked. I always thought Oprano was more profitable.

Vick 04-03-2004 03:05 PM

The paper in fire above is more in reference to the adult internet on-line industry than to the message board business

But looking around.....

... many who were/are successful in the adult on line industry are doing many different things now (some mainstream internet, other ...), they carried some of the knowledge, eyeballs and people from adult into other ventures

I don't think the adult message board business is dead but agree with Serge, it needs a shot in the arm to make it worth doing

Hmmm what to do to "pump it up"

or is it time for different boards, different subjects
the spitz thing had challenges but I think that may have been due to the nature of spitz

Season must change, different paths, different ways

you are shocked because you just don't know what people make in the board business.

Boards , 99.99% are owned by people who looks at the boards as
1) tool to promote their own programs
2) collect ad revenues which is VERY small % of their income

as boards go,
Oprano is withing TOP 4 ALL TIME BOARD MONEY MAKERS,
behind by YNOT, Netpond, GFY,
who were all much longer in business than Oprano,
with GFY being the ONLY board with the same owner from the day one.

Yes you are right. I had no idea. That was a very enlightening post. I have never used boards as promo tools because I have nothing to promote on a board. But it is interesting to see what is and get a little insight.

ha ha ha good one!

Serge am I reading this right

You are mentally hungry, needing stimuli

as opposed to being hungry for success or something else?

I'm trying to see the nature of the beast to get at possible solutions

Will chew on it a while and let you know if anything stirs

as I hope many others do as well

Vick, you read it right....making more money than NOOF in 1999,
quenched my thirst for success for the rest of my life.

one CAN have enough success, but for the live brains, stimuli is a MUST,
or brains dies.

This board is the ONLY place on earth I can share and be myself one hundred percent...the people from REAL world will NEVER understand it all,
you, my friends, do.

people are always predicting "the end"

Near future: Daniel Dl-Maio believes that UFOs have been visiting Earth for all of the history of the world. They are piloted by intelligent beings who once created the biosphere that we inhabit. He believes that there are forces on Earth that are trying to create the fiction that we will soon be invaded by aliens. All of humanity will then focus on preparing to repel such an attack. But, in reality, the "invasion" will be Jesus and his army returning to save the world. See: http://www.bibleufo.com

Near future: Tyndale House Publishers have created the "Left Behind Prophecy Club." In early 2004-JAN, they noted five events in the year 2003 that they feel are "compelling signs of the End Times" in our near future: Israel is constructing a 320 mile barrier to separate itself from Palestinian controlled land.
The removal of Saddam Hussein from power may result in the rebuilding of Babylon.
French President Jacques Chirac suggested that a "pioneer group" of nations within the European Union (EU) separate from the main EU group and progress towards a reunited Europe. This could be the ten kingdom prophesized in the book of Daniel.
By moving towards equal rights for everyone, they feel that the Episcopal Church (USA) is abandoning parts of the Bible. Apostasy was one of the defining characteristics of the end times, according to the Bible.
They feel that the election of Vladimir Putin and his party may lead to a rebuilding of Russia as a dominant player on the world scene, as is allegedly prophesied in Ezekiel. 29

Near future: The American Traditional Catholic Church predicts that "the three days of darkness" will envelop the earth shortly. As a warning sign, a cross will appear in the heavens so that all can see. The family and society will fall apart. "...the gates of Hell will be opened and satan and his demons shall be released and given authority to roam the earth without limitation. There will be complete darkness for three days. " It will be as if time has come to a stand still. The only source of light will be from candles blessed according to the traditional Rites of the Church Catholic." 23

Near future: AgapePress reported that Bishop Huey Harris of the First Pentecostal Tabernacle in Elkton, MD 73-year-old said: "What I'm seeing is the Scriptures being fulfilled right before our very eyes." AgapePress reports: "He says what he is looking for next is for the Church to be raptured, and then Jews receiving Christ as their Messiah."

1999 to 2009: Jerry Falwell predicted in 1999-JAN that Jesus could return within ten years. But before that can happen, he said that the Antichrist must appear. Referring to the Antichrist, Falwell said: "Is he alive and here today? Probably. Because when he appears during the Tribulation period he will be a full-grown counterfeit of Christ. Of course he'll be Jewish. Of course he'll pretend to be Christ. And if in fact the Lord is coming soon, and he'll be an adult at the presentation of himself, he must be alive somewhere today." Rabbi James Rudin of the American Jewish Committee suggested that Christians should be careful about making such comments. His said that Falwell's statement "plays into some latent and historical anti-Semitism from the past." 2 Rev. Falwell later apologized for his comment.

21st century: Thomas Chase 11 predicts that when the world's population reaches 6.66 billion, the war of Armageddon may occur. In early 1999, it reached 6.0 billion.

2004: Michael Drosnin predicted in his book "The Bible Code II" that there will be terror attacks against New York City and/or Jerusalem. They will be bio-chemical or nuclear attacks. This will trigger World War III. Almost all human life will be eliminated. 28

2004-APR: In the fall of 2003, a Pastor Hawking was allegedly predicting on a Hawaiian cable channel that the start of the Tribulation would occur in 2004-APR. It will arrive without warning.

2004-APR-9: Victor Hopchenk, and Orthodox Christian, has prophesized that by God's "wish and compassion", an asteroid will hit Los Angeles, CA, which he describes as the "center of propaganda of debauch, lechery, violence and cruelty." The asteroid collision will exterminate all life there. God wants Hollywood to stop creating immoral and pornographic films. He has given 49 warnings in the past; this is the 50th and final warning.

2004-OCT-17: Clay Cantrell computes the date of the Rapture from size of Noah's Ark with particular attention to the precise location of the "escape window" in the top of the vessel.

Late 2004: Arnie Stanton noted on 1997-SEP-16 that that evening was the fourth Jewish festival since 1996-APR-3 on which a lunar eclipse occurred. 5 He quotes Luke 21:25-26 which mentions "signs in the sun, in the moon and in the stars and on the earth distress of nations" He believes that "these recent lunar eclipses are the last known astronomical signs that will precede a 7 year (360 day/year) countdown to Armageddon/Christ's return to the Earth." He expects that Christ's return will occur within a few months of 2004-SEP-29 when Asteroid Toutatis will make a very close approach to the Earth - perhaps even a collision!

2006: Annie Stanton predicts that a 14.4 mile long asteroid will collide with the earth. Jesus will arrive and a 1000 year period of peace starts.

2006: According to the Sunday Times in England, a religious group called "The Family" anticipates the end of the world in 2006. "Members are said to be stockpiling food and planning to hide in caves in India."

2006: According to the Weekly world News for 2001-FEB-13, hydrogen bombs hidden in London, Washington and Tel Aviv will be detonated. This will be the start of the war of Armageddon

2007: According to the Weekly world News for 2001-FEB-13, the rapture will occur on the 7th hour of the 7th day of the 7th month of the Hebrew calendar year that corresponds to 2007 CE. Jesus will appear simultaneously in Jerusalem, Baghdad, Washington, Moscow and in every other capital city of the world.

2008-MAR-21: After a lengthy calculation based on the Bible, a British group, The Lord's Witnesses, has concluded that the start of Armageddon will happen on this day. Three quarters of the world's population will die during the subsequent war. This will be preceded by the United Nations taking over complete rulership of the world in the lunar month preceding 2001-APR-24. This is exactly 666 Hebrew months after the founding of the United Nations in 1945. 22

2008-APR-6: Philip B. Brown incorrectly predicted that the Great Tribulation would start on 2001-APR-7, with the appearance of the the two witnesses described in Revelation. He also predicted that the start of Jesus' millennial reign would be on 2008-APR-6. 27

2009-AUG-29: John Dutchman claims to be an astronomer at the Mount Wilson Observatory. He allegedly believes that a small star is passing through the Oort Cloud, the area surrounding the solar system where comets originate. He says that the gravitational pull of the star is forcing at least a third of all of the comets into the sun -- over one million. He predicts that the earth will be hit by from one to many hundreds of comets, ranging in size from 100 meters to near 600 miles in diameter. He expects the collisions to happen on 2009-AUG-29.

1998 to-2012 Gordon-Michael Scallion predicts major catastrophic earth events: global warming, melting polar ice caps, earthquakes, volcanoes erupting, etc.

2012: Michael Drosnin, author of "The Bible Code," found a hidden message in the Pentateuch (the first five books in the Bible) that predicts that a comet will crash into the earth in 2012 and annihilate all life. As a minimum, I suspect that at least one species will survive: cockroaches.

2012: Kev Peacock predicts that the Sun's magnetic field will reverse, and induce a reversal of the Earth's field. This will cause massive geothermal and tectonic catastrophes. Something will happen to the mythical island of Atlantis.

2012-DEC-21: The Mayan calendar expressed a date in the form: 6.19.18.1.5 This means: 6 Baktun, an interval of 144,000 days,
19 Katun (generations) of 7200 days,
18 Tun (years) of 360 days,
1 Uinal (month) of 20 days,
5 Kin (days)

for a total of 1,007,305 days. J. Eric Thompson determined that the first day of their calendar (0.0.0.0.0) was on 3114-AUG-11 BCE according to the Gregorian calendar. 5 This was when they believed that Venus was born. Another source says that this happened on AUG-13 of the same year. Mayans also had a "Great Cycle of the Long Count" of 13 Baktuns or 5,125.36 years. Many interpreters believe that the Mayans expected that the universe would last exactly that length of time. That is, they anticipated the end of the world at the Winter Solstice. 2012-DEC-21 or 13.0.0.0.0 in their notation. 6 John Jenkins has determined that on this date, there will be "an extremely close conjunction of the winter solstice sun with the crossing point of Galactic Equator and the ecliptic." This is an event that will not be repeated for thousands of years. Author Carl Johan Calleman disagrees that the Mayan calendar predicts the end of the world. He writes that "the Mayan calendar is about the progress of evolution, not about the end of the world." 25

2012-DEC-21: Terence McKenna predicts that at "the moment of the solstice and the heliacal rising of the galactic center, levels of planetary novelty will exponentially increase." The results of this "ultranovel event" are difficult to predict, but may include "Hyperspatial Breakthrough, Planetesimal Impact, Alien Contact, Historical Metamorphosis, Metamorphosis of Natural Law, Solar Explosion, Quasar Ignition at the Galactic Core." Some of these don't sound too healthy for life on earth. 17 I am personally hoping for the latter, because it would take may years for any effects of that ignition to impact earth -- long past my life expectancy.

2012-DEC-24: A visitor to our web site predicts that on this day, one third of the Ort cloud will rain down on the earth. The Ort cloud is a incredibly large collection of comets that encircle the solar system. Devastation would be total.

2014: According to Sun magazine for 1999-DEC-21, Pope Leo IX (1513-1522) wrote on 1514: "I will not see the end of the world, nor will you my brethren, for its time is long in the future, 500 years hence."

2016: An article in Weekly World News describes a find by a Professor Lloyd Cunningdale of Salt Lake City who was excavating with his students at the site of the famous Donner party disaster of 1847. The latter were a group of settlers bound for California who became trapped by snow in the Sierra Nevada Mountains. Cunningdale and students have found a time capsule left by the settlers which contains many predictions for the future. They predict that nations will abandon traditional methods of conflict and resort to the use of biological warfare. In 2016, one such disease will spread and kill all of the humans on the planet. 7

2017: The "Sword of God Brotherhood" believes that Armageddon will occur in 2017. The Prophet Gabriel has told them this. Only their own members will survive to repopulate the world. All of the others (including you and me) will "perish in hellfire." 8

Before 2018: The web site "A Nightmare for Everyone and the Countdown to 2000," predicts that an asteroid and comet will hit the earth, sometime between the re-creation of Israel in 1948 and 2018. See: http://www.geocities.com/Athens/Forum/8990/

2020s or 2030s: Bill Joy, co-founder and chief scientist of Sun Microsystems predicted the end of humanity in within 20 or 30 years, in an article in the 2000-APR issue of Wired Magazine. He wrote that leading-edge technologies such as robotics, genetic engineering and nano-tech may soon lead to the extinction of human society. 24

Before 2024: A web site titled "Fire from the sky: Meteors and Biblical Prophecy," predicts that a meteor (actually a meteorite) "could" hit the earth in the next 25 years. This would cause fireballs of debris, tidal waves, supher [sic] dioxide, a "red tide" in the oceans, and a dust cloud.

2028-OCT: Asteroid "1997 XF11" will approach close to earth. At first, scientists were concerned that there was a small probability that it might impact earth. However, data from 1990 has indicated that it will miss earth by about 600,000 miles. 21 Still, this is a near miss, as astronomical distances go.

About 2028: A visitor to this web site from Norway has analyzed biblical chronologies and determined to his satisfaction that "Jesus became Messiah [about the year 28 CE] exactly 4000 years after Creation." He believes that God created the world to last 6,000 years. Thus, the end of the world will happen about 2028.

Before 2038: Greenpeace predicts massive starvation due to population growth. Global warning will melt the polar ice caps and cause massive coastal flooding. Thousands of plant and animal species become extinct.

2038: The book "The Bible and the Future" predicts that "large percentage of the world's population will die in a series of severe punishments from God" at this time. See: http://www.alltheearth.com/future/summary.htm

2047-SEP-14: According to The Church of !BLAIR!, the human race will probably be terminated at 3:28 AM (Soho, England time). The church teaches, with tongue firmly in cheek, that if the human race does not discard their plastic conformity, then the Gods will withdraw their protection. The Gods don't want us to worship them; they don't want sacrifices or even offerings. They just want us to rid itself of our excessive "Normalcy". At that point, Astro-Lemurs (extra-terrestrials similar in shape to lemurs, but with rainbow colored bodies) will attack the entire human race and beat them to death with gigantic burritos. You have been warned. ;-)

2060: Sir Isaac Newton, Britain's greatest scientist, analyzed the Bible, which he believed contained God's secret laws of the universe. He concluded that the end of the world will happen in the year 2060. According to Malcolm Neaum, the producer of a TV documentary on Newton: "He spent something like 50 years and wrote 4,500 pages trying to predict when the end of the world was coming. But until now it was not known that he ever wrote down a final figure. He was very reluctant to do so." 26

2076: Bede the Venerable, an 8th century Christian theologian computed Jesus birth as 3,942 years after the world's creation. The 6,000 year millennial week will thus end in this year.

2076: Some Sufi sects expect the end of the world in this year, which is the year 1,500 in the Muslim calendar.

non-threaded boards always seemed more homey to me... people get involved in a lot more of what is being discussed instead of seeing a page with 10 topics and maybe opening one of them that looks interesting.
I don’t like non-threaded. I enjoy discussions and threads. Non-threaded boards, to me, seem like they invite all that dribble. I enjoy the ability to read discussions from certain people that intrigued me.

I came on to the whole webmaster board thing much later and Oprano was really the only board I ever spent time on. Even tho I opened my first site back in 1995 hen the whole affiliate/webmaster networking thing took off I was busy or just not interested. Quite honestly I’m still not. I see the advantages and disadvantages. I enjoy Oprano because I’ve met some cool people here and I truly enjoy the discussions. These days I’m heavily involved in a non-adult project and my sites do ok with very little work. Adult Internet is not my primarily focus and I doubt I’ll ever get back into it the way I had been in the past. Still, I enjoy coming here, reading and seeing what everyone is up to.

The industry is changing. Many of us seen it coming a long time ago. Even bigger changes are still yet to come.

Serge is this a mid-life thing? Kidding- I think you’ve moved into a place of balance and where you just don’t need all the nonsense. You’re settled, happy and in a great relationship with a wonderful woman. You’ve pretty much done everything in life you’ve set out to do. Now you just want to sit back, smile and hang out with friends. Makes perfect sense to me.

Very similar subjects have been the topics of many dinner conversations among some of the Atlanta crew for the better part of the last month...

My take is that Oprano is, and always has been, the water cooler for the mature members of the industry. The demographics here include many people who go back to 97-98 and mostly users over 30, and many WELL over 30. The conversations reflect it.

I've said it before, a successful board is one that draws like minded individuals who want to have converations with each other together. In that regard, Oprano is an overwhelming success.

The trick is if you want to make a business of it, how do you make that work? As has been stated already, innovation isn't happening at such a rapid pace. And when the brightest minds do make a discovery, it is typically not in their best interest to share it now.

The big boys in the industry now roll out new stuff or turn big deals on average how often? Maybe once a quarter? Every 6 months prior to Internext? We might hear about a couple of big deals every quarter. Advertising has become more of an exercise in letting people know you're still around and have money to spend and thus can afford to pay your affiliates in many cases.

Love it or hate it, most of the business is being done by the TGP Monkeys in terms of quantity. They're not doing 5, 6 and 7 figure deals, but instead there's a lot of 3 and 4 figure deals and B2B action going on with people selling traffic, gallery spots, scripts, content, hosting, etc.

The point of entry both intellectually and monetarily in this industry is so low that until something major changes to thin the herd, the TGP hoards are going to represent the majority of the industry in terms of population. And unfortunately it is virtually impossible to have bulk traffic these days without doing a bit of TGP work. All of the other sources of traffic have all but dried up.

We've all had to learn how to deal with ALOT of water in our soups, stews and gumbos....

I can't believe I am reading this. At first I thought it was just another SO wank post. But now I do believe he speaking from the heart. I am still not totally convinced but leaning that way. If it is the case that you are getting maudlin and broody you might consider the purchase of a nice porch swing and a new pair of slippers. Figuratively speaking of course.
I think I am very lucky because I had a long and satisfying career in the entertainment business before I did this so have no heights to climb (yes I really did meet all those people and many many more), just cruise, make money, travel and sleep in. So I am content with what I do.
As the internet becomes more universal, it is possible to do this job from anywhere in the world. I was updating my sites at very high speeds from Cambodia one of the poorest places in the world.
20 K a month is OK dough to raise a family, so why not just tread water and/or do something challenging if this bores you. Buy a new business and get a mini van for the new Oprano family soccer team.

Dianna Vesta 04-03-2004 04:19 PM

Serge you'd make an excellent father and you know I ain't kissing your ass. I've seen you change over the past year and paid close attention to your pictures.

Maybe you and LL should adopt but think about it carefully. personally I'm waiting for my son to have kids. I can enjoy them as if they were mine and give them back when I have other things to do. I'm not sure I could do all that again. The woman I've been seeing the past 9 months just moved in and she has two grand babies. They can come in the summer a few weeks and we'll all have a great time.

Or get another puppy. lol

You both look great BTW.

Hell Puppy, good post and very true. I also see some very big companies that were always in adult plunging forward. It almost looks like they purposely waited for the storm to pass before coming in and bringing that qaulity edge to the net.

why?
because:
1) the toilet water doesn't taste good even at 20k a month

2) where is the guarantee that the "next business" water will taste any different?

Serge, the water isn't any different from one business to another in the end... but the enjoyment of the new flavor of toilet water is what keeps it from being so boring. This business WAS fun because people changed the toilet water daily. Now we are lucky if people remember to flush.

Never say never because fantasy is still pretty damn good even if it stays in your head forever.

If go away for a long time why not bring your dogs out here? I have lots of room and most areas are fenced off. We have toyed with the idea of boarding but decided not to. Taking care of animals is what I do. I had a friend stay here a few months while she relocated to the area. She brought her Akita who doesn't like anyone. She has a hard time keeping the dog away from me. That dog will hate living in an apt after this. The dog plays with baby pigs and goats, hangs out on the farm with me and eats what my dogs eat - rice, fish, eggs, veggies- all natural. Every two weeks everyone gets a bath, ears cleaned and then they go out and roll around in the grass.

I work at home and just took an office 5 minutes away so I can scoot home to check on everyone. I'm installing some cams next month in the animal pens and across the land. You'll see.

Time for dinner.

Those dogs are a pain in the ass. I had an ex who got one and ended up finding a home for him. Always research before deciding to get a breed and make sure it fits in with your lifestyle.

I don't really have any strong, coherent thoughts to add to all of this but, Serge, if you want to run the board without Morons, prizes, "would you hit this" and cowtowing to sponsors, then I say by all means do it that way. It has worked thus far :okthumb:
