Congrats CT, my son is interested in AF too but for now he has to settle with ROTC. :P
Ccongrats to you too Peaches.. You have to be feeling really proud. That's awesome! |

Here are the ones he's interesting in: http://usmilitary.about.com/library/milinf...obs/bl2e2x1.htm http://usmilitary.about.com/library/milinf...obs/bl3e5x1.htm http://usmilitary.about.com/library/milinf...obs/bl4t0x1.htm http://usmilitary.about.com/library/milinf...obs/bl3a0x1.htm http://usmilitary.about.com/library/milinf...obs/bl1a4x1.htm http://usmilitary.about.com/library/milinf...obs/bl2g0x1.htm[/b][/quote] Without even looking, I suggest he become a Parajumper, Combat Controller, or Fighter Pilot. |

Or he can go the intelligence route as well. |
He's interested in the pararescue but with his eyesight, will never do anything inside a plane. And the intelligence....well, let's just say he might have a hard time getting Top Secret Clearance and leave it at that. :awinky:
In looking at the list, it's an old one. Most of those he realized weren't what they seemed to be. I dunno - he scored well enough on his ASVAB to pick what he wants, but hopefully someone there will point him in the right direction. Of course, they'll also try to point him in the direction of what they need to fill. :P Last edited by Peaches at Jan 14 2004, 02:41 PM |

Congratulations CT !!!! :cdance: :cdance:
Way to go.................. :okthumb: |

He looked into the medical field since that's where the $$$'s going to be in the next few years, but he's really not THAT interested in it. I told him it was silly to spend 4 years learning how to do something he doesn't like so he can spend the rest of his life doing something he doesn't like. :( They pay 100% for his school while he's in, plus the GI bill. I recommended he do whatever job he WANTS to do w/o out putting much worry into what he can on the outside (within reason - Band would be a bad idea, for instance :P ), take some accounting/finance/business classes on the AF's dime while he's enlisted and then use the GI bill to get a degree for work outside the USAF. But he's never listened to me before, hehehe. B) |
Clemson,
A big congrats to you man!!!! You will do well in the Air Force, and no worries about basic training, It's the easiest of all the services. More mental then physical. As your mom says, try and get a job that you will enjoy and also that might have some use on the outside. |
|
There is a section there that has a "career counselor" question and answer which might help him out a bit. They have good explanations of the jobs as well.

In my opinion, the Air Force has better training and base support facilities like housing and clubs than any of the others--If I was starting out all over again, I'd go Air Force (though that $50K yearly retirement I get from my Army retirement is still A-OK)!

Congratulations, kid (and Mom)!!!! Now, as a Navy vet I would have suggested you join the military - either the Navy or their wholly-owned subsidiary, the Marines. But scouting is nice too ... :D
I think the training is pretty equal throuhout the services these days ... but re the facilities, dave is right. There's a reason for that, though. Army/Navy/USMC goes to build a base, they build [whatever they need for the military functions of the base], run out of money, and go back to Congress for barracks, clubs, blahblahblah. The Air Force goes to build a base, they build barracks, clubs, blahblahblah, and go back to Congress for runways, aircraft, etc. |

BTW ... only (mostly) kidding about the Air Scouts. I spent 9 years, 5 months, and 22 days in (what was then) the world's 2nd largest nuclear navy, and was never on board a U.S. ship. Having asked the Navy for any ship in San Diego, California (there were one or two there), I was sent to the Naval Air Station, Brunswick, Maine. Did have 800+ flight hours, though.
Well, my experience was, um, more than a week ago, but that's the way I remember it too. Stateside, the barracks we lived in was an old open-bay "converted" to two-man "rooms" with old office cubicle dividers. In Bermuda we stayed in barracks that hadn't really been modified much since the Brits gabve us the base as part of Lend-Lease. The Air Force base we detached to in the Azores had rooms far nicer than the one I had in the very new dormitory at the University of Missouri. I can only imagine what it was like in Torone's day ... I'm pretty sure he said he served with LT(jg) J. P. Jones :D |

Me, I had to do all my Navy time in: Key West Bermuda (this counted as sea duty even though I was never on a ship) Ferndale California and Cape Hatteras, NC (again, this was counted as sea duty for rotation) It was tough fucking duty, but someone had to do it................. :yowsa: |
Clemson Tiger, and Peaches,
Congrats to you both. :okthumb: :salute: |
An Army General, an Air Force General and a Navy Admiral are all partying together at the O club and the get arguing over which of the military forces has the "most guts".
The Army General finally says, ok, lets go on over to the base and I will prove that the Army has more guts than either of your pussy cub scout clubs. So, they go over to the army base and the general grabs the first private he sees walking by. The general tells the private, "I want you to get in that jeep over there, I want you to take it up to top speed and drive that jeep directly into that brick wall". The private gives a crisp salute, says "Yes Sir", gets in the jeep and drives it at top speed into the wall, destroying both the jeep and himself. The General then looks at the other General and the Admiral and says "Now, thats guts". At this the Air Force General replies "that aint shit". So, they go on over to the Air Force base and the general grabs the first pilot he sees walking by and tells him. "Captain, I want you to take that fighter jet over there, I want you to fly that fucker all the way straight up into low altitude orbit, then I want you to reverse course and bring that jet down into this concrete right on to this dime", and then he threw a dime on to the runway. The pilot gave him a crisp salute and said "Yes Sir". Then the pilot proceeded to get into the jet, took off, put the jet vertical, flew it straight up until he was out of sight, reversed course and crashed the jet directly on to the dime at about 2000 miles per hour disintegrating both the plane and himself. The Air Force General looked at his friends and said "Now, that guts". The Army General said "well, you got me", but the Navy Admiral just stood there laughing, "you aint seen guts yet". So, the three went to the Navy base and the Admiral took his friends out to the pier. He located an Aircraft Carrier with a sailor working on the topmast. He shouted up to the sailor, "Hey you, I want you to dive off of that mast into this pier and kill yourself". The sailor yelled back down, "WHAT!!!". The Admiral replied, "I want you to dive off of that mast into this pier and kill yourself, NOW!!!". The sailor looked back down, raised his middle finger and yelled "FUCK YOU!!!!" The Admiral looked at his two friends and said "Now, thats guts" ................................. |

He must have done something really really really bad. I would think the Crypto stuff would be out of the question if he can't get the clearance. |
I remember Peaches mentioning something that had nothing to do with his personal conduct.
What you've said is absolutely correct if you use common sense. However, we're talking security procedures here. Seldom the twain shall meet. I have friends who are STILL pissed at the fact that the FBI showed up at their door to interview them about me. I suspect that somewhere in Washington, in my personal file, is a note about the odd coincidence that almost everyone they interviewed about me flushed the toilet several times before they opened the door ... :salute: [insert green leafy vegetable substance smiley here] |
Let's just say that there was an incident that may or may not be on the records. Asking former teachers, neighbors, friends and relatives would be great, but again - we're not sure what could be pulled up record wise. B)
And don't forget two very important things: 1) This is all post 9/11 2) They are swamped with applicants who have literally never done anything wrong in their entire lives. Boring, but just the same..... :P |

So I guess this means soon Peaches will no longer have to put a sock on the outside door knob whenever she trips the wild fandango...

Sorry I'm coming to this late but CONGRATS - I know how much this meant to you to get in, this is excellent news! :rokk: :rokk: :rokk:
Re: the AF over other branches of service... my grandfather was Navy, my dad was Army and my hubby was Army - all are encouraging my son to go AF because all said "if I had it to do over again, I would have gone AF." Something about nicer barracks, better food, more options... So even though they are EXTREMELY proud of their particular branches (the Army/Navy game is *fun* around here - lol), they want the best for my son - and they are all pointing to the AF. To me that says a LOT... Good choice! :okthumb: |

There is just something inherently sick about posting on a porn message board with your son. Esp spastic animated gif happiness about mom being able to get her geriatric groove on when the offspring are sent off to fight for the neocon crusaders.
The whole fucking thing gives me the heebee jeebees. |
