This one's for Dan. 1979 (12-0) Alabama.
67 points given up in 12 games. 5 shutouts. |
Colin, we put in mass subs in every game
you deal with statistics statistics lie put on your tv and watch the D Saturday espn.com Red River Shootout The oddsmakers have not been able to figure out this rivalry. Until this game, Mack Brown's side has been expected to win each year, but lost the last three. Finally, Oklahoma is the favorite. That's a pretty easy call, actually. Bob Stoops says this is the best Oklahoma team he's coached. There's something of a myth at work here. Some fans want to believe that Texas has a huge edge in number of thoroughbreds in the stable and that, somehow, the scrappy OU overachievers just find ways to win. Nonsense. OU has phenomenal talent all the way down the defensive two deep. Texas has had great offensive skill people the last few years and sent tackles like Leonard Davis and Mike Williams to the NFL. But OU hasn't exactly had backs and receivers off the scrap heap. Bob Stoops rarely blows smoke and is not often unguarded in his rhetoric. So take note when he says THIS is his best OU team. That would include the 2000 national title team that waxed Texas, 63-14. There's no reason to doubt Stoops. The Sooners have a more complete, versatile offense than the one that limped down the stretch three years ago. The defense is now without two excellent linebackers, with Pasha Jackson joining surgery case Lance Mitchell on the sidelines for a couple of weeks with a sprained MCL. That'll hurt, no doubt. But the offensive line from Texas I watched up close last weekend will have some serious trouble with Tommie Harris and the Sooners' front. Mack Brown has a problem: using Vince Young may spark the offense and give provide better mobility, but it also lessens the potential value of Roy Williams. Young is not yet an accomplished passer. With him running the show, receivers become blockers more than catchers. Williams said as much this week. Young is a special option quarterback, though, the kind that can turn the corner and lean forward for five yards before you know what's hit you and he can also take it 60 yards to the house. Chance Mock is the guy with the better mastery of the passing game, but will he be able to deliver before he's buried? The defensive tackles of Kansas State caused big trouble for UT and they're not in Harris' class. At times, the Horns second offensive line looked more physical and inspired last Saturday as they rotated in during Young's early series. I see trouble for Texas Saturday. |

There's a problem with what you're saying. Your claiming that something is "the best" at something while ignoring all the competition. "The best" by definition means better than all other competitors. And how many of the great defenses of the past few decades can you name that you "watched on tv" and why are they all not as good as OK in your opinion? How do you think a team that only gave up 20 points once and shutout the #1 offense in the nation looked on TV? Fortunately I remember. Needless to say a team that only surrendered 20 points once in an entire season is going to look pretty amazing. Any team blowing out their opponents has lots of subs. That's not just in OK. ;-) I'd like to point to a team other than my own favorite though because I know what bias can do - which evidently has you in its grip. ;-) Unfortunately, I don't know a team that performed better defensively than the '91 Canes from the past 2 decades. Maybe there is one. Assuming that players get bigger, better, and faster and that defensive strategy improves there should be a cut-off point going back. Maybe a fair benchmark is to look at teams recent enough that there is still NFL talent that was playing in those years. Otherwise someone could go back and look at Yale in 1888, a team that didn't give up a single point for an entire year. Oh, Walter Camp. You've watched enough TV over the years to judge a team as "best defense ever" and are willing to do it based on 5 games played against teams with average offenses? Texas is one of the top offenses in the country. I'd say shutting them out would be equivalent to the '91 Miami defense's accomplishment against the #1 offense at the time, Nebraska. You don't need statistics to know that holding the #1 offense in the nation to 0 points is a sign of greatness. I'll give you another team I think has a better D. 1987 Oklahoma. Oh,and not trying to "dis" Oklahoma. They are possibly the best team this year but that's not entirely clear yet. They're very talented. Most of the top teams haven't played much of a schedule at all yet though. Everyone is fairly untested.
Until someone beats the Buckeyes they're number one in my book. Last edited by Colin at Oct 10 2003, 09:17 AM |

OU rolls here no problem. Hooper you shoulda taken the points, but it probably wouldn't matter as the LongHorns are going to get blown out. At least you get to enjoy your loss and go hunting :nyanya:
Here's some interesteing reading for ya http://covers.com/data/ncf/game/g8_11000.html http://covers.com/post01/showmessage.asp?s...87&ur=142370433 |
OK my prediction was off
65-13 boomer sooner we roll over Texas bring on the cane's |
OU looked pretty damn impressive....
Great defense. Dynamic offense. I cannot see anyone beating them, not even Miami or OSU. |
a while back i got to sit in the stands one sunny saturday afternoon in lawrence and watched oklahoma lay a similar pasting on the jayhawks.
that never fails to bring out the most repeated phrase ever by KU fans: just wait until basketball season :) rock chalk jayhawk KU |

While Oklahoma has maybe their best team ever this is just a rebuilding year for Miami having 4 players go to the NFL in the first round alone. I didn't expect much this year with the departure of Dorsey, McGahee, and Andre Johnson but glad they're playing well. OSU trailing Wisconsin 7-3. Almost half-time. Will OSU pull off another close one? |
what a pathetic loss. i'll give ou that they played well. good solid football. but their real secret weapon was us!!! our own turnovers fucked us ONCE AGAIN :-(

Mizzou is riding HIGH after beating Nebraska
gee fake FG remember Stoops pulled that out last year at Mizzou, to win the game hee hee all long as the boys focus each week don't look ahead we should be fine OSU (OK STATE) has quietly gone undefeated since the week 1 lose to Nebraska and we know about OSU giving us fits hmmm Colin, how about OU? we lost Quentin our leading rusher, our starting QB, in fact we lost the top 4 all time OU recievers last year. but we aren't rebuilding I think we have 9 or 10 returning starts on D We have an oral commitment, (insert joke here) from Rhett Bomar Texas HS QB ranked number 1 on rivals.com :bjump: |
Hmmmm ... next week's game just got a lot more interesting.
Edited to add ... I just looked it up, and I was at the last game when Missouri defeated Nebraska in Columbia. And I was a fucking student. Yes, muthafukas, they wore helmets ... leather, but :D Last edited by PornoDoggy at Oct 12 2003, 01:11 AM |

hmmm are you looking at records of the future opponents? we got Mizzou 5 - 1 @ Colorado 3- 3 OK State 5 - 1 Texas A&M (me and brad going) 3 - 3 Baylor 3 - 3 @ Texas Tech 5 - 1 Big 12 Championship Mizzou/Neb/Kansas 4 - 2 Miami's schedule tougher? the pussy big east? I think our future opps have a better record 1 less loss? and Big 12 is much harder than pussy big east puh lease hee hee :D |
Ah Ohio State lost, I couldn't be happier this weekend.
|
I'm so tempted to start betting online
I predicted the over in the Texas Tech game last week this week Mizzou plus pts and Wisconsin plus pts but i never opened an account with a site should I? does anyone bet online? |

I know Texas A&M/Oklahoma is a big game in your part of the country but Texas A&M is not even on the radar screen in the rankings. Just because Colorado won some games in the 80's doesn't make them a good team now. Colorado got destroyed this year by Florida State, Washington State, and Baylor of all teams. And just because you choked last year againt *cough* unranked in-state rival Oklahoma State doesn't mean they are any good. All that being said, I think Oklahoma has by far the best team in the country this year. Grimm knows betting. He's a pro. Talk to him ;-) |
darling colin
I see the top 25 Texas Tech OK State Missouri just missed it and don't forget the big 12 championship we have to play i hope we get the canes in the sugar bowl it'll be worse that OU FSU remember that game? |
Quote:
Now that they just barely made it to the promised land after the new polls came out ... there ya are. ;-) Yeah, I hope we get to the Sugar Bowl too but I honestly don't think we have the offensive talent to go undefeated this year. Brock Berlin is going to lose us a game somewhere. The offense isn't scoring. Winning with defensive TDs, kick returns, blocked kicks. Not the kind of stuff that will usually get ya undefeated. Will probably lose to VTech. But we are 40-1 our last 41 games. History in the making. I wonder if a team has ever done that before (?) |
I had to post to this thread, being i'm a huge CANES fan.............Colin i agree, we probably will lost to VT, unless Berlin has a huge game!
|
Bud Wilkerson steered OU to, 48 or 49 in 0
so sorry, No hee hee brock is what? 1 td/1 int ratio good LUCK boys and I thin VT is overratted who did they play? the Big East is great for BASEKETBALL hee hee I just took my caffiene i'm hyped we are hanging half a hundred the past 4 games oh lordy oh lordy me and Brad, 50 yard line, Sugar Bowl holding hands, open gay relationship hee hee |

Yes, that was a huge blow to the offense..........We need Winslow to catch 10 balls a game :) |

Probably right on the Big East. Miami, Virginia Tech, and Boston College are all moving to the ACC next year. UM, VT, and FSU will make for a powerhouse conference. Oh, yeah. BUT, the Big East has produced 25% of all national champions the past two decades *wink wink* |

Yeah. He's fast, mean, has great hands. and can block. All around great player. I was a big fan of his father's back when he played for the Chargers. Some of those younger receivers are running bad routes, Parrish is in the hospital, The O-line is patched together, Beard didn't catch a pass. This is a patch-work team for us. We took a hit at every offensive position except Tight End this year. All that being said, we're still just one of just a few undefeated teams. Coker doesn't get enough credit. People look at all the talent he has and thinks anyone would be 21-1. I doubt it. He's an excellent coach and finds a way to win even when the team is as maligned as it is. |
As long as the defense stays healthy, we might have a chance at going undefeated.

About 10% Oklahoma falls. Which means about 55% chance that one or the other will fall. |
shit Miami might be the road dog at VT huh
second time a dog in one season holy shit OK State lost in week 1 to Nebraska but quitely has gone undefeated since and Josh Fields is the only drop back passer in recent memory to be successful vs OU hey we lost 2 all american, ( think pasha is all american, maybe not) LBs Pasha should be back so what did stoops and the boys do? fuck thet 4-3 we played 4-2-5 and brought up Nicholson to the line we are famous for kick ass safetys fuck famous for kick ass D |

Yeah, OK State quietly beat up on SW Missouri St, SMU, and LA Lafayette. Their offense is good but that will be nullified by a great Oklahoma D. Their defense is probably just average (the single digit games against above three powerhouses exempted). Very true that VTech hasn't played anyone yet. Pathetic schedule so far. Last year they started out great and then choked down the stretch. This VTech team looks a little better. We'll see. Maybe they are overrated. |
