Now, I just have a public school education, but it seems to me that the Nazi flag may carry a bit more baggage than the Japanese or Italian flgs might. To my knowledge there aren't any currently active hate groups who proudly display the "Rising Sun" or Italian flags as a symbol of their views.
It was an absolutely STUPID selection for use at the halftime show of a high school football game. |

Hmm, I've got a public school education too PD - but I still don't see the reason for the uproar.
I would agree the timing could have been more politically correct but at the end of the day, whats done is done. To ignore significant parts of history is incomprehensible to me. Being from the South, there are lots of people still flying the Rebel flag, all over the place. I have a lot of friends who could choose to be offended but instead choose to care less... |

As I said, the Nazi flag "lives on", so it's probably an inadvisable choice for a halftime football show regardless of the day. |
Hmmm, if they had the Allied flags 'attack' the Axis flags in this show, and beat them all into the ground, would that have been more acceptable to those that took offense?

My cousin and her husband are artists. He paints some pictures that I find pretty offensive but he does it to get a reaction out of people. (He hates Republicans so we have some interesting discussions) I don't see much difference between that and showing a nazi flag especially when it's for artistic reasons. I guess we should just ban everything that anyone might find remotely offensive. Yeah, that's the ticket. |

Yeah, I'd much prefer a Teletubbies half-time show than something of historical importance........ (of course, we wouldn't want to offend the Christians, so we'd have to remove the "gay" teletubby) |

Maybe we could do a halftime show commemorating the VietNam war, complete with a couple of VC flags being waved and some "hippies" burning the American flag?
|
Sure, as long as we had some skinny Marines jumping on the fat hippies in their Kent State shirts and beating them up.

I have a question for you..... should a daughter breast feed her father? YES or NO and what the reaction of the crowd should be? I am serious as a heart attack and expect your honest answer |
As part of a football halftime show?

let me chew the sentence for you to make it easier to process...
in your opinion, is it socially acceptable for the daughter to breast feed her father? |
why would he answer leading and loaded questions?
the whole issue is about what may or may not be appropriate at a high school football game. not about incest at a high school football game. stop picking on Texans. |

Sweet. In 100 years WWII will be known as the war in which the US, Britain and France held hands and gave out flowers. All references to the Nazis and the other Axis powers will be wiped out. Everything bad should never be mentioned because then it will never have happened.

... or maybe we could just leave it all to history classes, books and documentaries? |
I don't know anything about daughters nursing their fathers ... but I do recall the closing chapter of the Grapes of Wrath. If you want to discuss art, that's fine - but we're not talking about art. We're talking about the halftime show at a fucking high school football game.
Perhaps some of you went to different kinds of schools than me, but the most offesnive thing I ever saw at a high school football halftime show was the marching band attempting to play pieces from "Tommy." It's not what I consider an educational venue - so all this crap about not teaching about the Nazis seems more than a bit hysterical to me. |

It's a fucking flag that was flown during a halftime show that encompassed WWII. That doesn't make it a celelbration of what the fucking Nazi's did. Don't you have a clever photoshop to add to this thread? I added mine...I call him Love and Flowers Hitler.... |

It was orchestrated presentation, it IS art! therefore, neither yours nor JR's arguments hold waters, unless of course, you wanna join forces with Jessee Helms, Ashcroft and company and enforce YOUR definitian of "art".... go ahead, make my day |

Don't you have a clever photoshop to add to this thread? I added mine...I call him Love and Flowers Hitler....[/b][/quote] my point is not "its a flag and its a terrible thing" my point is that "its a part of history, so it's ok" is a weak argument as well. why is it relevent that its a part of history? Turks invading neighboring countries, burning villages, raping and throwing babies in the air to try to stab them in mid-flight is a part of history too. so what? are we going to not be upset at a "spear a baby" at the half time show? my point is that there are clearly boundaries to acceptable and unnaceptable displays and there are cleary appropriate and innapropriate times and places. who decides those boundaries? you? me? Serge? people do. people decide what is acceptable and unnaceptable. people decided right there on the spot that they did not like it. They had better information to make that decision than any of us do here. unlike Serge, who continually makes irrelevent referrences to Stalin as if there are some parallels between October 1917 in Russia and The Great Paris Texas High School Football Game of 03'... they made an educated decision. I would go further to say that the boundaries for acceptable behavior of Sykkboy, updating a porn site while listening to megadeth may in fact be a little different than the boundaries of a family of 6 at a school function. I am not saying anyone is right or wrong. i am saying that the argument itself that "its a part of history...blah blah blah" is just as weak and silly as any other argument. Serge is more clever than i am because he just declares people to be wrong and thats the end of it. sucks i did not think of that first. Last edited by JR at Oct 3 2003, 11:41 PM |

Actually, the teacher who put this together should be fired for trying to something educational during a football field, because last thing we want associated with football is education....what was he thinking? |

I live in rural Illinois, and it's the same thing here. I know that's it's close to that in some of the St. Louis suburbs too. I've heard the H.S. football in Texas is equal to basketball in Indiana - it's not a relgion, but close. |
If the local community felt it was in bad taste, then the organizers of the event would suffer their due fate. Their reputation would be subject to review and there would be consequences.
Certainly, you cannot expect to apply the first amendment equally and not have people offended. Why does there have to be consequences beyond that? It seems to me that to expect / request consequences beyond this is to merely express favoritism among ideological agendas. |

its fine to say "i dont see anything wrong with that" - I might agree. But to defend that argument simply by saying that "its just a part of history" etc etc, is no stronger than the arguments of those saying its innapropriate for their own reasons. |
